@TheaBrandt , I agree with @toastofthetown . We have MPs with names like Rosie, Daisy, Tulip, Ellie and Holly, so why cringe - it's a style you don't like but there's no need to cringe for them.

TheaBrandt · 16/10/2023 16:42

I don’t think it’s fair to name a girl a cutesy ditsy type name. Babies grow up. Op asked for opinions - that’s mine.

TheaBrandt · 16/10/2023 15:33

Hmm. There’s a serious late middle aged news reporter called Daisy and I slightly cringe for her. What if you are not arty / bohemian? Sorry but I like stronger names for girls.

I cringe for people who are so judgmental about names to the point they can’t get past them when someone has a really good career. Her name clearly hasn’t held her back!

BeyondMyWits · 26/05/2024 14:08

Poppy is seeing a bit of a resurgence with Hogwarts Legacy... she's the nicest, sweetest character in the game.

Cucumbering · 26/05/2024 14:09

i Prefer Pippa

KirstinBlest · 26/05/2024 14:55

I'm not keen on Pippa but like Philippa. They're not really like Poppy.
I know dogs called Poppy, Pippa and Penny.

Firsttimebabymummy · 26/05/2024 17:48

I like it and only known of 1

Pemba · 27/05/2024 15:10

It's very British and not a name that travels well. For instance 'Pops' or 'Poppy' is often used in the same way as 'Grandad/Grandpa' in the USA.

Somebody on one of these threads once described how their teenager went with a group on a school exchange to somewhere in Europe (I think maybe France) and when the teacher from the host school would read the register out they were suppressing laughter when they read out the name of one of the UK teenagers, Poppy. A bit mean! So probably it also means grandfather or something else inappropriate in French.

The flower is lovely yes, but is the sound of the word really lovely?

Just something to consider.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 27/05/2024 15:16

Lots of names people can’t imagine on a middle aged woman are goi g to be completely normal in 20 years time. I know lots of babies and little girls called ‘cutesy’ names. Poppy. Daisy. Rosie. Lily. Millie. Molly. Maisie. Lottie. Lola. These will all be perfectly valid middle aged names when generation alpha are in middle age.

RogueFemale · 30/05/2024 01:23

Poppy thoughts... I wouldn't like to be called Poppy. It's not awful like Kylie or Chardonnay. But it's No.13 on the ONS list of female births 2022, with 12 variations such as Poppy-Grace, Poppy-Mae, Poppy-May etc, which tells you the chavs have moved in.

Hotpinkangel19 · 30/05/2024 01:42

Love it!

sawnotseen · 30/05/2024 05:31

It's ok. I know a 26 old Poppy who is doing well - uni, travelling. I know , many in their teens and one who is 10. To me it's like Daisy, nice but not great. As a middle aged woman, I wouldn't like it to be my name.

Chaoseverywhere · 30/05/2024 10:40

Gorgeous name and I think it works for adults too

Rachel234561 · 31/05/2024 06:42

It’s a gorgeous name. Love it! Love all flower names. I find some of the comments on here ridiculous. Poppy is awful but Petunia, Constantinople and Maud are great! 🤣😬 Poppy is a very pretty girls name in my opinion.

KirstinBlest · 31/05/2024 08:45

I really like Maud

Pemba · 31/05/2024 09:09

KirstinBlest · 31/05/2024 08:45

I really like Maud

@KirstinBlest I have been thinking that I like Maud too! I don't know why people are so down on it, when similar vintage names like Florence, Violet etc have been popular for a while now. Maud would make a good middle name, short, flows well with most names and a bit different from the ubiquitous Rose, May or Grace.

KirstinBlest · 31/05/2024 09:23

When joking with a friend about what we might change our names to, he said I was a Maud. Once I got my head round it, I liked it.
The Welsh version of Maud (Mallt) is gorgeous.

I really like Maud

Exactly, personally I find it a very ugly woman name. Worse than Maureen and Gertrude.

I’d also put Mavis, Mildred and Eileen in the Maud ugly name box

KirstinBlest · 31/05/2024 09:48

I like Maureen - it makes me think of someone pale, dark-haired and beautiful. I think Eileen is pretty, and more unusual than Isla. Gertrude isn't great but Trudy is ok and Gertie is cute.

They're not fashionable, that's all.

Mavis is too closely linked to Corrie for me, but that goes for Ivy, Audrey, Elsie etc. I like Rita and Sally though.

Wow! Someone who likes Maureen. Found one!!! I rest my case. Hence no one should take peoples opinions seriously on this forum. ‘Eileen is prettier than Isla’ My dog is called Isla and picked it as it’s a gorgeous name.

Smartiepants79 · 31/05/2024 09:55

Flower names have been in consistent use for centuries.
I do not get mumsnets weirdness about them not being suitable for adults. Many names sound ridiculous on a baby or child but still get chosen.
Choose what YOU love.

KirstinBlest · 31/05/2024 10:04

@Smartiepants79 , I said I think Eileen is pretty, and more unusual than Isla. not ‘Eileen is prettier than Isla’ . They sound quite similar and both sound pretty to me.

What do you think of Máirín and Eibhlín?

Did a 7 month old thread need to be woken up? OP has probably already named the child!

Nubnut · 31/05/2024 10:07

How about Rosa? same vibe but works on an adult too
