Jesse - yay or nay?

I’ve always liked Jesse for a boy. OH not too keen, he thinks it’s too American. I did a quick look on our customer database at work, it’s not a common name by the looks of it but there are a fair few knocking around in my corner of the county. They can’t all be Americans surely.

Is too American?
Too girly?

Thanks 😊

Too 'you big jessie'

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 02/10/2023 12:47

I love Jesse. It's number 64 in the UK and I believe much lower in the US so no, I don't consider it American! (And this is coming from an American ;)

You will get some people touting "you big jesse" as a reason not to use in the UK, but I've never heard that and I don't think name-based bullying is really a thing anymore, given the breadth of kids' names these days.

Brownhairdontcare · 02/10/2023 12:52

I have a male Jesse in my life, he's in his 40s and his name suits him perfectly! Jesse Armstrong and Jesse Lingard have made it more 'normal' in the UK. I think it would have been tough in the 80s having a name like that, but I can't imagine my kids (13 and 10) making fun of anyone for their name, where we are (London) there are all sorts of different names used in the playground and no-one bats an eye!

Tennisfan1 · 02/10/2023 13:36

I really like it but not sure if I'd be brave enough to use it

Orangewall · 02/10/2023 13:44

I know a baby Jesse and it really suits him!

peaceinourtime · 02/10/2023 13:55

Yea it’s really nice and is a nice refreshing change from the tons of Alfies, Archies and Oscars around.

PerspiringElizabeth · 02/10/2023 13:56

Have heard of the phrase ‘you big Jessie’ but literally never once heard it used in context.

Know a few young Jesses. Like it. Prefer Joel.

Cindy1802 · 02/10/2023 13:57

My 2.5 year old sons best friend is called Jesse - we really like the name.

Plump82 · 02/10/2023 13:58

This is why I wasn't called Jessica. My dad was having none of it!

TomatoSandwiches · 02/10/2023 13:59

I don't like it I know it's American but it also reminds me of Australian surfers 🤷‍♀️

Plump82 · 02/10/2023 13:59

But just to add, I really like it for a boy.

Horriblewoman · 02/10/2023 14:00

It’s one of my favourite boys names.

User9088 · 02/10/2023 14:02

I really like it!

I don't see it as an American name at all, it's a Bible name

NiceParkingSpotRitaThanksJanet · 02/10/2023 14:12

I love it!! I wanted to call my son Jesse but his dad's best friends little boy has the name so he wasn't comfortable using it. Now I'm pregnant again and if its another boy I'll be trying to persuade him!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 02/10/2023 14:16

I really like it and have taught a few. The most recent was lovely but also an absolute unit and I don’t think anyone would have dared to make any ‘big Jessie’ jokes to his face!

LadyEloise1 · 02/10/2023 14:27

Carly Simon has a great song called Jesse.
I presume it's about James Taylor as they were married at one time and he featured on the single.

Beamur · 02/10/2023 14:30

I really like it too

Dizzydeers · 02/10/2023 14:33

I love it but wasn’t brave enough to use it 15 years ago when I had the chance.

Babyboy2000 · 02/10/2023 14:46

@Brownhairdontcare That is not true. I'm a pastoral team worker at a school, and children MOCK other people names. Perhaps, it didn't happen to your kids but it occurs.

StoatofDisarray · 02/10/2023 14:51

Yay!

Tinytigertail · 02/10/2023 14:57

I really like Jesse for a boy, go for it!

TotalOverhaul · 02/10/2023 15:00

I love it. It's a good old biblical name.

miniaturepixieonacid · 02/10/2023 16:21

I love it, it's my favourite boys' name.
