Carla or Dalia?

Hello everyone!
My partner and I can’t agree in our Daughter’s name. We are Spanish but we live in UK so we need a name that works in both countries.
Our final choices are Dalia or Carla.

I personally always love the name Carla, also is very popular in Spain right now but not in Uk.

Which name will suit better for UK?

many thanks :)

Carla is a lovely and lively name. And everyone will know how to pronounce it.

Dalia is nice but can be pronounced more than one way and the darkness of the whole 'Black Dahlia' thing would put me off it.

Scruffington · 22/09/2023 13:03

plus obviously the British spelling of Dahlia is different to the Spanish.

Exactly! That’s what I told my partner and personally I don’t like Dalia with the H. Also I don’t want my Daughter spend all her life telling people how to spell or pronounce her name.
Thanks for your reply x

Carla's more unique, but easier to pronounce and spell I think

peaceinourtime · 22/09/2023 14:54

I know a Della, I haven’t looked it’s origins but it’s nice.

Carla is a wonderful name. Feminine buit with energy.

Jessbow · 23/09/2023 14:01

How would you pronounce Dahlia?
Dar-lee-Uh
Day-le-uh

Something else?

Carla is much simpler

OrangesLemonsLimes · 23/09/2023 14:03

Carla. Simple and classy.

cherryassam · 23/09/2023 14:04

I think Carla is lovely - I think there might be spelling / pronunciation issues with Dalia. I’m not sure if it’s Dar-lee-uh or Day-Lee-uh or Dah-Lee-uh .

theduchessofspork · 23/09/2023 14:18

I don’t really like either but Dahlia I guess - I think she’ll have to spell Dalia all the time. Carla is very 50s council estate (sorry to be harsh)

There are lots of lovely Spanish names that work in the UK though - Maria, Fernanda, Adela, Carmen, Alba, Paloma, Lucia, Camilla, Ines, Mariana, Rosa.. I’d look again

Blahblahblah2 · 23/09/2023 14:26

Dalia is lovely.

Anonimo · 23/09/2023 16:31

The pronunciation is Dah-Lee-uh.

I think we are gonna go for Carla. I have been checking names for months now and I am getting stressed about it. There is not many names that me and my partner likes that works in both countries.

I know the name Carla in Uk is probably dated but we have another Daughter with even more unpopular and dated name for UK and she loves it as she is the only one in her school hehe

Thank you everyone for your comments :)

Carla is a lovely name and although there are probably relatively few younger Carla’s in the UK at the moment, I think it would work perfectly.

PickledScrump · 23/09/2023 21:04

Carla would be considered a very “chavvy”name where I am, as much as I hate that term.

Dah-lee-ah is lovely but would be better with the Dahlia spelling as Dalia looks more like it would be day-lee-ah which isn’t as nice.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/09/2023 00:35

Carla. Very nice.

mayorofcasterbridge · 24/09/2023 00:37

What about updating it to Cara?

Anonimo · 24/09/2023 00:40

Cara in Spanish mean face :) but thanks xx

I love both. Dahlia was on my list and my beautiful friend is Carla. You can't go wrong with either

I bet you don't really hate that term, seeing as you've just used it.

Carla is just beautiful. It was the name I had picked for a girl but I had boys. I would still use it over 20years later
