Regretting our name

Janie1234 · 21/09/2023 17:23

Well we named our daughter Giuliana, but now I’m having name regret and don’t know how to shake it. Did I make a huge mistake?
is it hard to pronounce when first looking at it? Does it look weird? Maybe I should change it?

what do you think of this name?

I think it's really beautiful, and Gia is a lovely nickname too.

YouveGotAFastCar · 21/09/2023 17:25

It's cute.

How old is she? How are you? Name regret can be linked to PND, or just caused by the shock of such a big life change.

Do you have a clear idea of what you should have called her? Do you think this is just your brain struggling with the enormity of giving someone a name? It's a pretty big deal.

I wouldn't change it unless you're absolutely sure that you got it wrong.

ConfessionsOfAMumDramaQueen · 21/09/2023 17:28

First glance I thought you were just trying to be inventive with spelling Juliana.

Nothing wrong with it, but people will probably assume its Juliana and she will spend a lot of time trying to spell it and people telling her they know how to spell juliana 😂

DisforDarkChocolate · 21/09/2023 17:28

I had to Google how to pronounce it. It's a lovely name.

Gowlett · 21/09/2023 17:30

I would assume there’s an Italian connection.

MidnightOnceMore · 21/09/2023 17:30

It's a nice name, but change it if you're not happy - don't force yourself to live with it.

It's Italian. Not wrong.

Whataretheodds · 21/09/2023 17:31

It's lovely. I'm working with a Giulia at the moment and had thought it was a nice name. Gia too.

Agree - how you are feeling is important here.

Adviceplease2314 · 21/09/2023 17:32

If you don’t like it or think it doesn’t suit her then change it. You could give her a different first name and keep the original as a middle name.

LilyLemonade · 21/09/2023 17:32

It’s not hard to pronounce. It doesn’t look weird. I personally prefer the English spelling but assume you have an Italian connection?

Whataretheodds · 21/09/2023 17:30

It's Italian. Not wrong.

I never said it was wrong, just it isn't what's most commonly used in the UK. I know someone called Hollie - she constantly tries to spell it and people get offended saying they know how to spell it but always spell it Holly and don't take it well when they're told they're wrong.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/09/2023 17:34

It's a lovely name if you have any Italian connection.

Workawayxx · 21/09/2023 17:35

I think it’s beautiful. You may get sone mispronunciations but I prefer your spelling to Juliana. Are you going to shorten it?

Enko · 21/09/2023 17:38

Its a beautiful name Italian connection or no Italian connection. The name remains beautiful imo.

Mistressanne · 21/09/2023 17:41

It’s a lovely name.
My ds started school with a Sinead 34 years ago. The headmistress couldn’t pronounce the name initially but within a week everyone knew how to say and spell Sinead and it doesn’t seem at all unusual now.

Janie1234 · 21/09/2023 17:42

I’m part Italian, and it is the traditional way of spelling the name so it’s not a made up name. I like classic timeless names which my other kids have so I don’t know if that fits with this one. I feel like everyone spells it wrong or even when we are at the doctors for example they don’t know how to say it. She is a couple months old already, I feel like I was pressured in the hospital but it was the only name my husband and I could come to an agreement on. I feel like I did like it before but now it’s driving me crazy
perhaps it is partly due to PPD I don’t know.
My mother also told me a week after she was born that she wasn’t fond of the name which didn’t help and constantly refers to her as the baby. I don’t think she has ever even said her name out loud to me.

It’s very pretty but I can understand why people are getting it wrong. I love Gia/Gigi as a shortened version.

What would you change it to? Juliana or something completely different?

Hermittrismegistus · 21/09/2023 17:48

It's a lovely name.

KirstenBlest · 21/09/2023 17:52

You can change a baby's name fairly easily up to 12 months old.

If I saw the name, I'd assume an italian connection, and would know how to say it. If I heard it, I'd probably spell it as Juliana. (IMO the italian spelling is much nicer)

Accept that you can change the name, and that you have a bit of time to think of a different name or decide if you want to keep using it.

Make an appointment to see your GP to find if there is an underlying health reason that might be making you worry about the name.

CurlewKate · 21/09/2023 17:53

Might you feel happier if you anglicise the spelling to Juliana? I agree it's annoying if people are struggling to pronounce it. Or you could just call her Gia-which is lovely and easier to say. If you really think you'd be happier changing it then do. It's no big deal at this age. But also-think about getting helping you think you might have PPD.

Janie1234 · 21/09/2023 17:55

I don’t have a name that I am totally in love with that I would change it to which is also part of it. I thought about changing it to “Juliana” but I don’t like the nickname Julie at all. Or maybe calling her by Her middle name Marie
other names we had thought about were Marielle, Angelina, Mariana, Eva.

OP posts:
Topseyt123 · 21/09/2023 17:55

It's the classic Italian spelling of the name and I do like it.

I think I'd be more tempted to go for the English spelling of it though (so Juliana). Not because I like it more, I don't. I would just think that it would cause less confusion and thus need much less constant correction and explanation than Giuliana would.

If you really don't like it though then you can still change it on the birth certificate up until the child is a year old. Or so I understand anyway.

minipeony · 21/09/2023 17:56

Very nice. As PP said how are you?

OuiRagamuffin · 21/09/2023 17:58

oh i love it! I'm not Italian, not half Italian, don't speak Italian (although I do speak Spanish) but I knew instantly it was Italian not ''wrong''.

There's nothing to stop you changing it to Juliana and still calling her Gigi, Gia or any other nicknames you wish on an informal basis. There are no hard and fast rules there so nothing that could stop you.
