i grew up with a friend whose sister was called Sorrel and I always liked it. Does anyone know any other baby Sorrels ? Considering other flower names but not of the Daisy, Rose vibe.

I don't know any Sorrels, and would worry about nn Sorry cropping up. Saoirse might be a good alternative

Flower names - how about Zinnia, Lilac, Violet, or Azalea

watcherintherye · 21/09/2023 12:12

Laurel?
Sorrel is perfectly ok, but I always associate it with a rather unfortunate and clunky surname, which slightly mars it for me!

cherryassam · 21/09/2023 12:20

I think Sorrel is nice, reminds me of both Soren and Laurel - Laurel is a lovely name too.

Other floral / botanical names:

Anara
Anemone
Aspen
Briar
Briony
Calanthe
Calla
Evanthe
Fern
Hazel
Hollis
Ianthe
Ione
Lavender
Linden
Rowan
Saffron
Sage
Tansy

The only Sorrel’s I know are as a surname, but no reason not to use it as a first name. It would work for a boy or girl imo.

PerfectMatch · 21/09/2023 12:27

I don't know any Sorrels but I think it's beautiful! Otherwise, maybe Rowan, Willow or Ivy has a similar vibe?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 21/09/2023 12:45

Sorrel is flat, green and common. Not particularly nice.

Anise
Cicely
Rosemary
Lily
Bryony
Paisley
Viola
Amarylis
Jasmine

Lindy2 · 21/09/2023 12:51

I like Sorrel but I always understood its meaning to be sadness. That puts me off a bit.

Laurel would be a similar and nice alternative.

eddiemairswife · 21/09/2023 12:56

Dock is similar to sorrel.

Rosemary is green, spiky and invasive but no reason not to use it as a name?

Sorrel 's a lovely name , go for it.

FayCarew · 21/09/2023 13:24

It's a sour-tasting unattractive edible weed. Red sorrel is pretty in salads.. Laurel is toxic.
If you live in an area where they sound an L as a w sound, it will sound like Sorrow

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/09/2023 13:28

I know a teenage girl called Sorrel, who is lovely. She has a twin brother called Prosper.

boscabosco · 21/09/2023 13:50

think it is kind of nice

Laurel may be toxic but it was used to crown winners in Greek and Roman times and gives us the names Laurence and Laura/Lauren/Lauren

Rosemary is fragrant, long lasting and symbolises remembrance.

You don't have to like the look of the plant, they have other properties (I probably wouldn't call a child Hemlock)

FayCarew · 21/09/2023 14:15

@Whataretheodds , I can dislike a name for any reason I like. I wouldn't use the name Lily because I don't like the smell of lilies.
I don't like the name Lauren but that's because of how it sounds. am i bovvered

watcherintherye · 21/09/2023 14:18

This has got me thinking about nature names which you don’t ever hear.
Foxglove has a nice ring to it, with the right surname!

What a bizarre response.

Of course you can dislike a name for any reason you like.

There is a Sorrel in my son’s class, I think it’s a lovely name

Startyabastard · 21/09/2023 14:25

Briar, Yarrow, Hazel.

I love the name Foxglove, the Welsh alternative is 'Ffion'.
I went to school with someone called 'Hebe'.

FayCarew · 21/09/2023 14:38

the Welsh alternative is 'Ffion'.
Ffion is a welsh name for a foxglove, it's not an alternative other than to 'bysedd y cŵn'.

Mumofgirls2017 · 21/09/2023 16:39

I don’t know any. How about

saffron
juniper
clover
meadow
cassia
daphne
marigold
azaelia
river
lavender
wren
lark
tansy
sylvie
blossom
magnolia

dressedforcomfort · 21/09/2023 17:58

Sorrel is really sweet.

HoratioNightboy · 21/09/2023 18:03

I've only heard of two, both actors of yesteryear:

Sorrel Dunger played Sarah Jane Harvey in Crossroads in the 70s, where I first noticed the name and thought if very pretty. And Sorrell Brook, who played Boss Hogg in The Dukes of Hazzard. Prefer it for a girl.

wetpebbles · 21/09/2023 18:05

Saffron
