Hi all, due a baby girl in two weeks and DH and I can’t decide on a name, it’s stressing me out. So far we’ve narrowed it down to:

Charlotte
Matilda
Philippa
Isabel

He loves Charlotte, I think it’s ok but don’t feel like it’s ‘the one’. I love Matilda and would go with that in a heartbeat but he isn’t keen.
I realise a compromise is necessary - what are people’s thoughts on these names? Thank you!

Feels like evert 2nd kid around my area is a Maddy or Tilly. Way too common for me.
I like Pippa, Isobel, Charlotte in that order. I know quite a few Charlotte's and Issy's though also.

Secondaryschoolstress · 22/09/2023 18:11

Oh they are all lovely (sorry no help)

I like Phillipa with nn Pippa or Pip
Matilda doesn’t lend itself to nn unless you use Tilly which is very very popular here
Likewise we have a lot of Charlie’s and Lottie’s around here who are Charlotte
Isabel is beautiful but again very very popular and risks the nn Izzy

mathanxiety · 22/09/2023 18:13

I think Philippa is gorgeous. Pippa is a lovely diminutive.

Charlotte, Isobel, and Matilda are all very popular.

Wakintoblueskies · 22/09/2023 18:26

They are lovely names.

I love Isabel but there are so many of them. I also love Izzy as a nn.
I like Matilda but I would be TERRIFIED people would call her Hilda and I think mean kids would and I really do not like the nn Tilly either.
I love the nn Pippa - more than I like the full name.
I don't like Charlotte because people do not pronounce it properly and simply mangle it around here.

35andThriving · 22/09/2023 20:51

The thing with Philippa is, it might get shortened to Pippa, and that name doesn't travel well. It means something rude / sexual in a lot of different countries.

I would rather know before I named a daughter Philippa or Pippa.

FayCarew · 22/09/2023 21:12

What's wrong with Hilda? It's much prettier than Tilda.

FayCarew · 22/09/2023 21:12

I know a few Philippas and they manage OK.

301963Laurie · 22/09/2023 21:15

All a bit dated but Isobel or Matilda are ok .

TaigaSno · 22/09/2023 21:16

I would choose Isabel from your list, but all of your choices are fine.

No need to stress though. Just wait until she is born. She will just naturally fit one of them more than the others! You don't need to make a choice yet.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 22/09/2023 21:22

They're all fine names. Personally I'm not keen on names that are very obviously started out as boy's names but with an a on the end, so Philippa wouldn't be on my list. Can you keep looking? I love Saskia, Rebekah, Callista, Anoushka, Tabitha. I hadn't realised how similar they all are!

AlfredaTheGrape · 22/09/2023 21:33

My partner would order them thus (from most to least favourite):
Isabel - likes it best
Charlotte - not keen just because of too much association knowing people called that
Matilda - thinks immediately of the Roald Dahl character and can't think of anything else
Philippa - doesn't like it

My preference would be Philippa nickname Pip or Pippa and I don't like the others.

OopsieeDaisy · 23/09/2023 21:51

Isabel is lovely, I also like Charlotte and Matilda is ok. Really not a fan of Philippa!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/09/2023 00:35

Absolutely love Charlotte ❤️

Nanny31 · 24/09/2023 00:40

Isobel

LovelyBoy2023 · 24/09/2023 08:40

Matilda used to be my favourite name but not any more so wonder if a bit dated.
Charlotte is fine.
Love Isobel but very common.
Like Pippa but not Philippa.

But all good solid names if they are your favourites.

FayCarew · 24/09/2023 11:36

I think it's more that Matilda was a bit different but now it's been used a lot more it's lost its novelty. I don't think it's dated.

SayingwhatIreallythink · 24/09/2023 11:38

Charlotte is my favourite out of those, then Matilda.

NKD · 24/09/2023 11:43

Ottilie?

Has the hint of Charlotte with a twist?

FayCarew · 24/09/2023 12:24

Not Ottilie, it sounds so drippy

rickobucks · 14/12/2023 19:56

Well between you you've chosen four historical names. Well done - historical names (a la Royalty) never date or become old fashioned for your child. I have nine Grandchildren - all with historical names. The four girls are utterly beautiful - Sophia, Katherine, Charlotte and Victoria. (the boys are James, Edward, William, David) Sometimes you finish up with a name which you both don't dislike. All the best with it. Be lovely to know what you choose.

We went with Charlotte in the end, when she was born it just suited her Smile I absolutely love it x

rickobucks · 14/12/2023 20:11

What a great choice. My Charlotte is very beautiful. More importantly her attitude towards others in need is so lovely. Your Charlotte is going to have a great life with you.

rickobucks · 14/12/2023 20:20

God ! I don't know how Olivia would forgive me. Strange. She's the one I see every week. !

Seamist22 · 14/12/2023 20:53

Lovely names!

Pippa / Philippa is my favourite- such a great name that’s suited to adults as well as children and isn’t over-used

Charlotte is lovely, but although Lottie is cute for a child, I’m not keen on that nn for a teen or adult and I’m not keen on the nn Charlie.

Isabel / Isabella is a lovely name but there are so many of them at the moment, if that matters to you

Matilda is lovely and I like Tilly for a child, but I’m not sure that nn works for a teen or adult

justmyluck1234 · 14/12/2023 20:58

I like either Charlotte or Isabel
