My husbands sister and her boyfriend have chosen the name we had picked out for DD. We are 8 months pregnant and the name is a family name for me. Can I still use the name?
we see them at family occasions nothing more.
the children will have different surnames and potentially different nicknames

Yes, I’ve come across cousins with the same name before and think it’s fine. Even better if they have different nicknames and you won’t see each other much.

Whinge · 20/09/2023 08:07

I know a lot of people say it's fine, but if I was in this situation I would choose another name. The children will only be a month or so apart, so DH parents will have 2 grandchildren with the same name and the same age.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/09/2023 08:09

No, awful for grandparents have grandchildren with the exact same name.

is there a variant you can use?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/09/2023 08:10

If the nicknames are definite and totally different I.e Alexandra and Alex and Sasha, that’s the only way it would work.

jackstini · 20/09/2023 08:11

Did they know you were going to use it? (Or do they now?)

No one owns a name, so you can use it, but yes it will be tricky for grandparents!

Are you/they definitely using full name or nickname?

Snugglemonkey · 20/09/2023 08:14

I would not use it.

Hydrowoman28 · 20/09/2023 08:21

@jackstini yes knew we was using the name as my husband said we’d be using it due to being a family name.
The name is Francesca (long form) ours will go by Frankie and currently their’s goes by Francesca and Frances

It's fine. In the past cousins often had the same name and they knew you were using it.

Orangeji · 20/09/2023 08:36

Yes it’s fine. There are few pairs of cousins in my family with the same name. Not even family names, each time the parents just liked the name. No one cares or has even commented on it other than a vague ‘oh lovely another x’.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 20/09/2023 09:35

With the name you have chosen this will be fine. X

LastNightAPandaSavedMyLife · 20/09/2023 10:27

No I think it’s weird sorry.

WDIAROM · 20/09/2023 19:30

I had chosen a name for my baby that was similar to my siblings child (not intentionally) - think Emma and Emily (not those names) - my baby being the Emma. My sibling always called her child by her full name (Emily), and then when I had my baby she demanded that I never shorten my child’s name to ‘Em’ because she wanted to keep that incase her child wanted to shorten her name to that in the future! People can be utterly bonkers when it comes to baby names.

SkaneTos · 20/09/2023 23:50

Use the name.
Especially if it's a family name for you.
Many cousins have the same first name.

user1492757084 · 21/09/2023 06:19

Use the name though you might feel more comfortable using it as a second name.

minipeony · 21/09/2023 06:21

If they knew you were going to use that name before they had their baby and gave it that name then go ahead and use it if you want to.
