We adore this name and are considering it for baby 3. Which spelling do you prefer?

Preferred pronunciation: "mah tee us"

Definitely Matthias if in the UK as people will be used to Matthew

S72 · 17/09/2023 17:08

Matthias

BeyondMyWits · 17/09/2023 17:10

I always use a single t if playing computer/console games as a male character. Didn't know it with 2.

Anni1234 · 17/09/2023 17:11

I know a mattias but however you spell it I think it’s a lovely name

KirstenBlest · 17/09/2023 17:12

Matthias. It will get said as Math-eye-us in the UK.

EstieGreenwood · 17/09/2023 17:13

Lovely name, I like one ‘t’!

Matthias. It will get said as Math-eye-us in the UK.

Might depend on accent - I think my area would render it mat-tay-us

mumtotwox · 17/09/2023 17:15

Yeah maybe Matheus/Mattias/Matias would be better for pronunciation in the UK?

@Giveuprobot , how would you get Mat-tay-us?

Giveuprobot · 17/09/2023 17:29

Just by speaking out loud.

MerryMarigold · 17/09/2023 17:32

I know one. Matthias. He is often called 'Mateus' (Ma-tay-us, the wine?) and occasionally Ma-thigh-us (biblical pronunciation but many these days don't know it). I think once he's corrected them (Ma-tee-us) people realise it's easy to say!

MerryMarigold · 17/09/2023 17:35

Ps. Matias is awful. I think I would say that 'May-shuss' but I would be very confused. There are enough European names and people in this country that people should be able to say Matthias.

Wrongsideofpennines · 17/09/2023 17:42

Matthias.

It was on our shortlist for boys but pronounced Math-eye-uss as we liked Biblical names.

continentallentil · 17/09/2023 18:34

The first one

However I would be prepared for people to pronounce it ma-THIGH-us like they do in the US. It’s nice either way IMO.

Puffinshop · 18/09/2023 18:50

My Icelandic-English son's name ❤️

We don't live in the UK but we've never found anyone there who couldn't say it properly and we say it how you described with the stresson the first syllable.

They don't always spell it right. He has the spelling with two ts and an h.

It's such a handsome name!

KnickerlessParsons · 18/09/2023 19:12

It will always be mat-eye-us or mat-ay-us. I have never heard Mat-ee-us

Daisybuttercup12345 · 18/09/2023 19:21

2 tts.
Prefer Matthew though.

Puffinshop · 18/09/2023 19:21

It's Mat-ee-us in loads of European countries. Basically all the ones that speak a Germanic language I think. Though the stress and accents vary a little.

SkaneTos · 18/09/2023 21:54

It is a lovely name, no matter the spelling!

In my home country the name usually has the spelling "Mattias", and all the men I know with the name are very kind and generous.

SkaneTos · 18/09/2023 21:55

And in my language the name is pronounced with a "tee"-sound.

PickledScrump · 19/09/2023 17:04

Family member with Swedish heritage is Mattias pronounced Mat-ee-as
