Saoirse?

Follow on from my Isla thread, another name I have in mind is Saoirse.

Sister would still be Hazel, and there’s very little chance of the name being mispronounced

It's one of my favourite names.

Sorry everyone, should have clarified I’m in Ireland. I didn’t think it was that little known outside of here though, thought it would be known enough in the UK anyway

If you said, more people would likely recognise it from the actress from GOT etc, but lots of English people (Inc myself) have no idea how those letters make the sound you say it doesn. It's like Siobhan. I know what it says. I don't know why 😆

SophieHope7 · 17/09/2023 16:02

It's beautiful. Use it!

Which actress from GOT?

Gensola · 17/09/2023 16:12

I am Irish and everyone I know pronounces it Seer-sha

Scruffington · 17/09/2023 16:17

caerdydd12 · 17/09/2023 16:04

Which actress from GOT?

I think pp was mixing Saoirse Ronan up with the girl who played Sansa.

Gymmum82 · 17/09/2023 16:23

My friend is Saoirse she pronounces it sor-sha rather than seer-sha. She’s northern Irish so not sure if that’s the difference

caerdydd12 · 17/09/2023 16:29

Scruffington · 17/09/2023 16:17

Ah they do look similar! I was racking my brains for a GOT actress lol

continentallentil · 17/09/2023 18:32

I quite like it

But if you’re in Ireland is Isla all that common anyway?

Minfor · 17/09/2023 18:39

I think it's a beautiful name but I'm afraid I do associate it with republican politics. I'm English, with a northern Irish (Protestant) parent.

Scruffington · 17/09/2023 18:47

I don't think something being associated with republican politics is necessarily a bad thing. It's okay to want a 32 county Ireland. But I can understand someone preferring that their child have a name without any political connotations.

defi · 17/09/2023 18:54

I love it! I think of the animated film song of the sea.

jays · 17/09/2023 18:57

Unless you live somewhere where everyone knows how to at least pronounce that name, for me, I wouldn’t. I have no clue how to say it, spell it …. That’s would just be a lifetime of my name being a pain in the ass for me.

UsingChangeofName · 17/09/2023 21:12

I think its a bit like Sara/Sarah, people with different accents will pronounce it differently

Well, no. They are 2 different names.

Sara = Sar - a ('sar' to rhyme with car, )
Sarah = Sair- a (sair to rhyme with hair)

I'm English, and I have seen it written down before (prob on a baby name thread on here) but I didn't have a clue how to pronounce it before this thread.

@Scruffington

There’s quite a difference between wanting a United Ireland…. And glorifying terrorism. A lot of people died.

I think it goes beautifully with Hazel OP. And being from Scotland I have heard plenty Catholic families use it, it's a gorgeous name.

'a lot of people died'

this is what I imagine a history lesson from Paris Hilton would be like.

Wanting a united Ireland and calling a daughter Saoirse does not mean a person is glorifying terrorism. Which is what you are saying.

The Sinn Féin newspaper first appeared in the late 80s, the name had been popular for decades before that.

Your husband is entitled to his opinion on a name, and you're entitled to take on his opinion, but please spare me the lectures.

LizzieAnt · 17/09/2023 22:50

It's the name of that particular publication @Sparklecats, but most people who choose the name Saoirse absolutely do not support anything to do with terrorism.

It does probably depend where you live but where I am at least (quite far south in ROI) Saoirse is just considered a nice Irish name now and doesn't really carry political connotations.

Love Hazel too OP.

@Scruffington

The point I was trying to make to OP is that northern Irish in particular, maybe some Scot’s will associate it with republicanism. And not in a good way.

I wasn’t saying that the name glorifies terrorism but that that publication of the same name does.

I thought it was a beautiful name but DH didn’t like the connotation/label.

OP should know that the name has that connotation.

Sparklecats · 17/09/2023 23:05

Also @Scruffington absolutely ghastly for you to dismiss the atrocities that happened and what that meant for people’s families and livelihoods. Horrific.

My DH was conscious of trying not to exacerbate tensions or make DC a target when visiting relations.

It depends where you are on the island as to what people think of it.

Sparklecats · 17/09/2023 13:10

It’s a beautiful name.

However, meaning freedom, is also the name of the monthly newspaper for the republican movement.

Depending on where you are in Ireland, people may assume political affiliations and prejudices about the child.

I know all this because I loved the name too but DH vetoed as didn’t want the baby “labelled”.

Same here. My daughter was almost Saoirse but being from NI and living in Scotland with all the independence chat ramping up when my daughter was born I decided against it. In ROI though not an issue.

What the actual fuck are you talking about now?

How the hell did I dismiss the atrocities? That's an offensive thing to claim.

I was dismissing your trite 'a lot of people died' line. I was dismissing you and your 'my Irish DH said...' as if marrying an Irish man gives you some greater insight and the right to lecture Irish people.

Run off and tell your husband that.

@Scruffington I have NI/Scot’s background too and grew up in the murder triangle.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I don't care, love. It doesn't give you the right to lecture to me, an Irish person, on things you don't seem to have a whole lot of knowledge on.

p.s try and develop an identity beyond 'I have an Irish husband and he says..'
