How do you pronounce Evelyn?

I’m just curious what the most common/classic pronunciation is.

When I was at school there was an Evelyn in my class, and she’s probably the only one I’ve ever known, but my partner has also known a couple of Evelyns and they were pronounced differently.

So what sounds normal to you?

  1. Eve - Lin
  2. Ever - Lin
  3. Ave - Lin
  4. Something else?

Thanks

Ev-Lin but with a tiny uh between the syllables. So almost ever Lyn but not quite.

I think a lot of the Evelyns born in the last few years are EEV Lyn though.

My DStepM's name is Evelyn (Eeev lin) She has hated it her whole life and has always been known by her middle name instead. I think its a lovely name but I like it pronounced as Evalin. Just personal preference.

Liv999 · 15/09/2023 09:55

Ev-lyn
Most babies born with that name now are Eve-lyn though for some reason

CuteCillian · 15/09/2023 09:58

Ever-Lyn

Pizzanight · 15/09/2023 10:02

My eldest has 3 friends called Evelyn and they are all Ever-lyn.

Scruffington · 15/09/2023 10:09

evva-lyn

VanillaFlotilla · 15/09/2023 10:10

Ev-uh-lin

Goldbar · 15/09/2023 10:16

Ev-lin.

There is a song called Evelyn by the band Hurts. I heard it when I was pregnant and fell in love, went with something else in the end but know my next daughter would have that name. No more girls, just boys.

The singer pronounced it Ev-uh-Lyn. Beautiful

Interesting I’ve never head of a male Evelyn before, I wonder if that’s still a name or one of those that has gone ‘extinct’ like Norman?

It is in the sane category of Florence. Sometimes I come across male Florence’s through work and although it is both male and female, it is predominantly used for females.

Wakintoblueskies · 15/09/2023 10:36

*same

thaisweetchill · 15/09/2023 10:37

Eve - lin

Yes the very same.

This is from Nameberry

  • Description: Florence is historically a unisex name, deriving both from Latin Florentius and Florentia. Although much more commonly feminine in modern times, it appeared in the US Top 1000 for boys until 1914.
AliOlis · 15/09/2023 14:11

Never heard of a male Florence 🤔. Amazing that someone knows several.

Fallen out of use for boys since 1914...

Apart from some muppets in America recently, but they call their offspring after random household objects so not very relevant.

Scruffington · 15/09/2023 14:24

The someone who knows several male Florences might be from Cork. Used to be a commonly used name there.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/09/2023 14:25

Ev Lyn

YukoandHiro · 15/09/2023 14:27

Ev - Lin

Lyricallie · 15/09/2023 14:28

Ev-uh-lin but I would expect to hear Ev-lin. But I’m Glaswegian we add extra vowels to things.

LetMeEnfoldYou · 15/09/2023 14:28

By saying 'Eleanor'

Can never keep those two names straight 😆

But when I get it right...ev-uh-lin.

Have you difficulty comprehending. I said I have come across it through my work.

With your snideness, I’d almost hazard a guess that daughter is a Florence and you’re annoyed you only realised it’s a unisex name now 🤣

Wakintoblueskies · 15/09/2023 14:50

Apart from some muppets in America

You really aren’t nice are you?

FrogInASock · 15/09/2023 14:58

Eave uh Lin (Ms Evelyn - my teacher in 80s Australia)

Ev uh Lin (my niece)
