How do you pronounce Evelyn?

I’m just curious what the most common/classic pronunciation is.

When I was at school there was an Evelyn in my class, and she’s probably the only one I’ve ever known, but my partner has also known a couple of Evelyns and they were pronounced differently.

So what sounds normal to you?

  1. Eve - Lin
  2. Ever - Lin
  3. Ave - Lin
  4. Something else?

Thanks

I teach, all of the Evelyn's I've come across (loads) have been Ever- lyn. I am alsi aware of the Ev- lyn pronunciation but not come across it. I'm in the South East/Home Counties

FoodFann · 14/09/2023 21:36

4.Ev (rhymes with Bev) Lyn (rhymes with pin)

WanderingWitches · 14/09/2023 21:36

Ev lin

Ivebeentogeorgia · 14/09/2023 21:36

I know a 75 year old and an 8 year old evelyn both pronounced eve- lin

flindorama · 14/09/2023 21:37

My mum and all the ones I've known/met (at least 6) - Ev-lin

I'm a teacher in Scotland. I've never heard pronounced any other way.

BeMoreBarbie · 14/09/2023 21:39

I don't even know. That's why I named my daughter Evie.

I wanted a formal version but if I read it I say ever lynne. Without reading it's eve er lynne and just thinking of the variations makes my teeth itch.

Due to DDs age there are loads of ev-lynns/evelynns and I remember being really glad I hadn't gone with the longer version and hearing people pronounce it differently to me.

  1. Eve - Lin
Islandsadness · 14/09/2023 21:40

Depends if male or female. That's the historic version

GolgafrinchamB · 14/09/2023 21:42

Eev-lin for a bloke
Ev-uh-lin for a woman

Wolvesart · 14/09/2023 21:45

Ever-Lyn female
Eve-Lyn male
based on female acquaintances and the author Eve-Lyn Waugh

UncleBobsUncle · 14/09/2023 21:47

I know two, one in East Midlands uk and one in oz, both Ever-lin

KellyJellyfish · 14/09/2023 21:51

Interesting I’ve never head of a male Evelyn before, I wonder if that’s still a name or one of those that has gone ‘extinct’ like Norman?

For me I’ve heard Ev (Bev) Lyn (Pin) and less commonly Eve (Leave) Lyn (Pin).

I like the name Evie but wanted a more ‘grown up’ name on the birth certificate, also to give her the choice of going by Evie, Eve, Eva etc as an adult.

Ev Lyn

Everyone I know with my same London accent would pronounce it the same.

Curiously however if talking about Evelyn Waugh I would pronounce it "Eve Lyn". Is that because that's how you pronounce it when it's a man's name? Or just random to me? Curious.

kitsuneghost · 14/09/2023 21:52

EV LIN

Findyourneutralspace · 14/09/2023 21:55

Eeverlyn but I have a great aunt Evverlyn

You haven’t heard of Evelyn Waugh?
(and amusingly, his wife, also Evelyn Waugh)

Evelyn is a bit like Leslie/Lesley and Marion/Marian and Francis/Frances and Sam and Chris that works as a name for either sex.

(Marion was John Wayne’s real first name)

RicStar · 14/09/2023 21:59

I call dd ev lin or ever lin interchangeably but for no real reason never eve lin. Everyone else calls her Evie though, so using the Eve sound.

CattingAbout · 14/09/2023 22:00

Ever - Lin

MrsCarson · 14/09/2023 22:02

Ev-lyn

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 14/09/2023 22:04

I always thought it was Eve-lyn for a man and Ever-lyn for a woman.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 14/09/2023 23:45

Ev el in

Ev-eh-lyn (so definitely 3 syllables but softer than Ever-lyn).

I'm a teacher so know quite a few and they've all been pronounced like this. I've only heard Eve-lyn on older generations and never Ev-lin in 'real life' (so always surprised to hear online that this appears to be such a common pronunciation).

Maybe it's regional how people are most likely to pronounce it?

Yes have heard of the author but he’s been dead for over 5 decades now, what I meant was I’ve never heard of the name in use in my life time, and I wondered if it’s one of those old names that’s now become extinct (I remember reading there haven’t been any baby Normans in a while for example)
