Too Eastenders?

We’ve been dead set on the name Billy for DS2, however for the first time I’ve said it with our surname and realised it is the same name as an Eastenders character (Billy Mitchell). Is the name too closely linked to the character? Do we have to go back to the drawing board?

Phil Mitchell and Grant Mitchell are certainly ones to avoid but the name Billy Mitchell doesn't have that same level of pop culture fame.

I think it's fine.

MrsSamR · 14/09/2023 15:43

I wouldn't personally. I've never really watched Eastenders and I can still picture the character.

Berlinlover · 14/09/2023 15:44

I wouldn’t but I’m a huge EastEnders fan, not everyone is as obsessed as I am and may not automatically link the name with the character.

PhilMitchellsleatherbomber · 14/09/2023 15:48

As you can tell by my user name I’m a big Eastenders fan so I would automatically think of the character, he’s quite nice now though in his older years, still a bit daft but generally good hearted so it doesn’t have bad connotations. Why not call him William and shorten it to Bill /Billy gives you and him more options?

fancyfrogs · 14/09/2023 15:50

I would think of eastenders

ReeseWitherfork · 14/09/2023 15:52

The name Billy Mitchell means nothing to me. Depends if you can cope with people commenting to you. I suspect the character will long be buried under the queen vic by the time your son is old enough for people to comment to him.

pinkyredrose · 14/09/2023 15:53

Not everyone watches eastenders. I've no idea who Billy Mitchell is.

Clefable · 14/09/2023 15:55

I'd think of Billy Mitchell from Eastenders too, sorry Blush He's quite a longstanding and popular character. Not quite Ian Beale proportions but I think the name is probably familiar to a lot of people,

Dorksdirectdotcom · 14/09/2023 15:55

Will Mitchell?

Clefable · 14/09/2023 15:55

(And I haven't watched Eastenders in about 15 years!)

Moveoverdarlin · 14/09/2023 15:58

I wouldn’t, I think most people would associate it with the character to be honest. He’s also still a prominent character. I haven’t watched for years but I know he’s still in it and would make that connection straight away.

MoonWitchMom · 14/09/2023 16:18

Back to the drawing board then! I’m quite upset as I’ve always loved the name but oh well!.

Yeah Eastenders sorry. I haven't watched it in at least 10 years but still..,,

Birdiboo · 14/09/2023 16:28

I wouldn’t let it put you off. His peers will have no idea who Billy Mitchell is

TomatoSandwiches · 14/09/2023 16:31

William Mitchell is nicer.

Findyourneutralspace · 14/09/2023 16:35

I’d go with William and use Will or Liam as an everyday shortening. I’ve got a William who isn’t called Billy by anyone else but I call him Billyboy as a nickname

continentallentil · 14/09/2023 20:05

No, but it sounds a bit naughty boy name. I would call him William as a full name.

daisypond · 14/09/2023 20:07

Just call him William and use Billy at home.

RuthW · 14/09/2023 20:43

Haven't watched it since the 90s but I still know Billy Michell. William, nn Billy would be better.

RoseAndRose · 14/09/2023 20:47

I haven't watched Eastenders since about 2010, but I still have an instant association with that character. Sorry

CharlieBoo · 14/09/2023 21:49

I wouldn’t think of Billy Mitchell.. but I do much prefer William then you have lots of choices of nn.
