Initials and nicknames

We’re finalising our baby names list, and on a couple of our favourites, the name that we’d plan on using day to day has a different initial to the full name (think an Elizabeth always known as Libby).

Do you think this would become an annoyance? I feel like I use my initials quite a lot, and wonder if it’d feel strange if they didn’t line up to the main name I use - but I’m also 39 weeks pregnant and possibly overthinking things 😂

Thanks in advance!

Why don’t you just call her Libby ? It’s nicer

Sorry, for clarification, Libby isn’t one of the names we’re looking at, just an example!

I have this - really hate my actual first name so I go by a nickname that's from the end of my name like Beth from Elizabeth (not my actual name, Elizabeth is lovely).

It's given me problems tbh...once I got a cheque from my birthday that was for Miss B. Surname instead of Miss E. Surname and I had to speak to lots of people at the bank and show them the birthday card with my nickname on (!) to prove it was for me. At work (teacher) we go by initials for everything but my initials match my full name rather than my nickname and everyone gets confused "who is EX" when they're expecting me to be BX, because everyone knows me by the shortened name.

I think the moral is just pick a good name (my parents didn't) so the kid doesn't feel the need to shorten it.

It can be a PITA if people use the wrong initial/name for something legal, financial or booking a flight.

If you did put Libby on the Birth Certificate, there will be some who will assume that Libby is Elizabeth on the BC

I'm known by a nickname with a different initial to my full name. It has never been an issue. We often use initials at the bottom of work papers and I use my initials from my full name and there's never any confusion about that either. I think you're overthinking it 😊

It also depends if it's a standard nickname for the name - for example Libby from Elizabeth is a well known shortening.

My name is more like Carmelisa which I shorten to Lisa. So if you've known me as Lisa forever, you're confused about my initial.

I've hated it so much and it causes so much bother.

Just give your dd a nice short name to begin with, that's my advice.
