So we've chosen Rhodes for our little boy.

We both really love the meaning and can't decide if it's a middle name or first name at this point.

My husband has suggested the following....
Rhodes Benjamin our surname is Eaton.

I think I prefer it as a middle name but I don't know if that's because I was hankering after something hebrew / biblical to match my little boy Elias Grey.

Do Elias and Rhodes go together or is it too much of a mish-mash?

I'm desperate for the boys names to sound nice together.

Just want some opinions before I get my heart to set on it.

Thanks all xxxx

Are you asking for opinions or are you asking for people to like it? I think you need to bear in mind the endless transport jokes he’s going to get

Marcipex · 10/09/2023 15:51

I think Benjamin would be a better first name.
Rhodes sounds a lot like Rose imo.

Rhubarbx1 · 10/09/2023 15:51

I'm asking for opinions and if it goes OK with Elias.

Yes, we'll there's worse things to joke about isn't there 🙄

It means "where the roses grow"

I don't like Benjamin as a first name. Sadly.

I know what it means, but other people will hear Rose and expect a girl.

Elias and Ben sounds lovely.

Thanks for your feedback xx

I think Rhodes goes very well with Elias. I think that's what you're asking specifically. And if ending in "s" goes smoothly with your surname, then no problems there either.

ClaraThePigeon · 10/09/2023 15:56

I'd use it as a middle name. I love a lot of surname type names but this one I don't and it makes me think of Cecil Rhodes which is not a good association.

Rhubarbx1 · 10/09/2023 15:58

I mentioned the Cecil rhodes thing to my husband but he's not phased by it. It's not like we've chosen it because it of that link, we've chosen it because we like the meaning and the fact its a nature name.

It’s not my style but it’s a nice enough sounding name and the meaning sounds like it means something for you. It does make me think of the Greek Island most of all, so as long as that doesn’t bother you.

I wouldn’t hear Rhodes and Elias and be shocked they were siblings, but I don’t think it ‘matches’ as well as Benjamin or another biblical / Hebrew name would. I do think Rhodes matches with Grey well so as whole names, Rhodes Benjamin and Elias Grey are stylistically coherent.

Rhubarbx1 · 10/09/2023 16:01

That's what I'm after, you've hit the nail on the head. I'm looking for something stylistically coherent, as you say.

If you wanted you could use the other derivatives of Rhodon or Rhodos.
I think the name Rhodes Benjamin goes well with Elias Grey.

LauderSyme · 10/09/2023 16:12

Elias and Rhodes sound good together, quite classy.

I like Elijah, Ezekiel and Joshua with Rhodes but maybe they roll better with Rhodes in the middle?

DinnaeFashYersel · 10/09/2023 16:29

People will think you conceived on the Greek island.

Middle name would be best.

Benjamin and Elias go well together

Rhubarbx1 · 10/09/2023 16:38

Maybe I did 😉

I do think it's a bad idea to call anyone a name which means they will spend the ready of their lives saying "Rhodes- no, with an h. Rh..yes, that's right. It is unusual isn't it-I think I'm the only one. I don't know- I'll have to ask sometime."

weeRagamuffin · 10/09/2023 16:43

I don't get it. Rhodes? I know that place names were trendy about 20 years ago (Oslo, Paris et cetera) but is that trend not over? Do you have a connection to Rhodes?

I don't think it goes wih Elias at all. Elias is fairly mainstream. Rhodes is a bit, what have I heard? It's not obvious. I'd have to say 'what' if somebody said their child's name was Rhodes. If the other child's name was Athens it would make sense but it jus tseems completely random with Elias.

mumtotwox · 10/09/2023 17:21

Don't think it works together, although it is possibly a grower of a name (like most)

Agree.

Totally agree. And jokes too.

MariePaperRoses · 10/09/2023 18:18

Awful for a first name.

He will grow up hating it and change it to Rodney as soon as he can.

Sushione · 10/09/2023 18:18

Was he conceived there?

Exactly this - I have one of those names and it's truly a pain in the arse. Name him Benjamin Rhodes, and you can always call him Rhodes at home

BowiesJumper · 10/09/2023 19:29

middle name yes. First name no, for reasons already stated above!
