Traditional girls names - alternatives to Elizabeth

SunnyDaisies · 04/09/2023 15:32

We am looking for baby girl name ideas as we are currently expecting number 3 and are now really stuck!

I love traditional names that can be shortened to sweet nicknames, especially nicknames that end in an -ie or -y sound.

Absolutely love, but can’t use:
Annabel (or any name shortening to Annie)
Elizabeth - already close relatives with these names

Your ideas will be gratefully accepted!

These are amazing ideas! Thank you everyone!

Rosemary (nn Rosie ….or Marie even) is definitely going on the list, I think this is a beautiful name suggestion.

Really like Katharine and Josephine too.

I'm a Victoria and my sister Elizabeth

continentallentil · 04/09/2023 22:05

You couldn’t use Elizabeth with a different nn to your relative? There are so many.. or you could use a variation like Elsbeth which would give you Buffy, Effie, Essie, Ellie, Elsie, Betsy, Betty

Anna / Annalise / Annis - Annie or Nancy

Susannah - Sukey, Annie, Susie, Nancy

Lydia - Liddy

Eleanor/Helena - Ellie, Lenny, Nell, Lena

Dorothea/Dorothy - Dorrie, Dorey, Dottie, Dot, Dora, Thea

Margaret/Marguerite - Margo, Maggie, Peggy and (traditionally/weirdly) Daisy

Caroline - Callie

Marianne - Maisie, May, Polly, Molly, Nancy, Annie

Mary / Maria - May, Maisie, Polly, Molly, Minnie, Min

Marina - Marnie

Frances / Francesca - Frankie, Franca, Francie, Frannie, Chessie, Chesca

Victoria - Vicky, Tory, Vita (I also know a Plum)

Alexandra - Alecky, Sandie, Ally, Sacha, Andie

Stephanie - Stevie

Georgina - Georgie, Gigi

Henrietta - Harriet, Hetty, Hatty, Hennie, Harrie, Etta

Cordelia, Cordelia - Cordy,

Natalia - Tally, Natasha, Tasha, Sasha

Patricia - Pasha, Tish, Patchy

We have a Katharine. The only problem is that it can be spelled many, many, ways.

CobraChicken · 04/09/2023 22:16

I know it doesn't fit your nickname criteria, but a friend's daughter is called Bethany and that's all anyone ever calls her (so you still get the "ee" ending.) I really love her name.
