Does Kiera look misspelt to you?

It's our favourite spelling and was actually the most popular one before Keira Knightley came along. Now I am worried it will always get mixed up with Keira. But we like Kiera so much better. Any advice?

The other ones we like:

Holly, Chloe, Lily, Lyra, Poppy, Emily and Ariadne.

I prefer Keirah probably because it’s how my name is spelt

YourNameGoesHere · 27/08/2023 19:00

Go for Kiera people will probably spell it incorrectly at some point anyway but not because of Keira Knighly. Although if I remember correctly Keira Knightly's name is actually misspelt

LarkspurLane · 27/08/2023 19:05

The original Irish version of the name is Ciara, so I think Kiera is closer to that.
It does look a bit weird but maybe because I am more used to Keir/Keira.

loveyoutothemoonandtosaturn · 27/08/2023 19:20

Do you not like Ciara? Much prettier and the original Irish spelling

LulooLemon · 27/08/2023 19:31

Ciara is the best spelling.

Traceyislivid · 27/08/2023 19:33

Was there not a story that her name was spelled incorrectly by her mother when registering her name. Or is that an urban myth?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/08/2023 20:05

Kiera is the correct anglicised way, like Kieran.
Ciara is Irish.

Keira Knightly's parents spelt her nabe wrong.

WhiskersPete · 27/08/2023 20:35

I like your other names too. My DD 10 months is called Lyra Holly.

CremeEggThief · 27/08/2023 20:36

Ciara is the only way to go!

BarelyLiterate · 27/08/2023 20:40

If you’re going to use a traditional Irish name, you should spell it correctly : Ciara.

ciakace · 27/08/2023 21:03

Like Ciara but so commonly miss said in England as Keyara or see ara but personally would go with Kiera looks neater

This.

Peony654 · 27/08/2023 21:05

Yea it does to me. I wouldn’t chose a name with so many spellings, myself.

Keir Starmer is the correct spelling but I see it spelled Kier on Mumsnet and elsewhere almost as much.

I wouldn't use Kiera or Keira for that reason - too much confusion. Would Kira be an option?

LynnBenfieldsnephew · 27/08/2023 21:13

I recently heard someone calling to their daughter Ariadne (our kids were playing together) and it sounded so lovely it’s really sold me on that name. Kiera is pretty too though.

SequinsandStiIettos · 27/08/2023 21:14

Holly, Chloe, Lily, Lyra, Poppy, Emily and Ariadne.

Holly and Emily are my favourites
Kira is a decent compromise

Labgo · 27/08/2023 21:17

The first time I came across Ciara, I thought it was pronounced like the singer (Sierra)! I prefer the name Chiara and Ciara always reminds me of that name due to being so close in spelling, but Ciara is a much nicer and traditional spelling for Kiera - admittedly with a K, I am more used to seeing Keira.

BoleynMemories13 · 27/08/2023 21:19

I'm aware it was the 'usual' anglicised version before Keira Knightley rose to fame but she's been famous for over 20 years now, which is a long time to get use to a spelling, so I'm going to be honest that yes Kiera doesn't look right to me and I think it would get written as Keira a lot.

I did teach a Ciara once. I'd go for that over Kiera, if Keira isn't an option.

To be honest though the spelling issue would put me off personally, especially when you have so many other lovely names on your list. Holly is very underused these days imo, such a lovely sweet name. I'd go for Holly.

Winnipeggy · 27/08/2023 21:55

My SD is Kiera. It took me a while to get used to the spelling only due to K Knightley being my only frame of reference! but I don't think it's a problem at all. Go for it, it's a lovely name

SuffolkUnicorn · 28/08/2023 07:13

My parents are Irish and that’s how mine is Spelt you can also add a G after the A
I went through school in the 80s with people spelling my name Keirah or Kierah

i dislike the ciara spelling

PurpleChrayne · 28/08/2023 07:26

Keirag?

EinyLinky · 28/08/2023 07:36

I prefer Kiera, I think of it as the most acceptable spelling after Ciara, just like Kieran! So I say go for it

It's not just an Irish name, it's used in several cultures.
