All baby names were made up once

I see a theme on mumsnet of people not liking names that are made up or 'aren't proper names'. But all names were made up at one point. I don't see anything wrong with making up a new name that is completely unique.

I'm not a fan of celebrity names such as apple, North West etc

but names I have made up for the sake of this post such as Vesoria, Orlynde, Jovelie, Klyria, Iselora: I don't see any problem with people making up names like these.

Why are people so against it?

@Neverseenbefore
@heartofglass23

language was made up once, and all meaning we have assigned to words is completely made up by our ancestors.

Language evolved, I feel that's a different process.

Obviously people are allowed to name their kids whatever they like but I think it's OK for people to not like made up names.

This reminds me of the Lucky Buoy thread. Just because you can name a child anything you want, doesn't mean you should 😅

  1. Because people making names up often have a really tenuous grasp of phonics rules and/or overlook dodgy associations
  1. Because there is a massive overlap between people with poor education/chaotic lifestyles and those with 'originally' named kids

Miadora- Mia and Theadora
Ameliana -Amelia and Liliana
Alilah - Alice and Delilah

Without knowing that the names were a combination of two existing names, I think I'd only get Miadora right.
I'd say Ameliana as Am-ellie-ana and Alilah as Al-eela.

If I'm not familiar with a name I often will get the letters in the wrong order or get one letter wrong.
