Trying to find something with a nice and non-religious meaning and a bit different but not too “out there” 😅

Some names I’m liking are:

Ace
Casey
Devin
Emrys
Marley
Sylvan

What do you think of these and any other suggestions?

Darwin reminds me of the monkey from the Thornberrys before Charles Darwin if I'm honest 😬

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 10/08/2023 17:02

I know 2 KC's. One M one F.

avocadotofu · 10/08/2023 17:04

Honestly, I don't like any of them, sorry.

salamithumbs · 10/08/2023 17:13

We have very different tastes so not really sure what names to suggest but if you want something outside the top 200 names you could go for something like Flynn, Cian, Heath, or Cillian?

OrangeJ · 10/08/2023 17:51

I quite like that these are a bit controversial!

@salamithumbs I used to love that show but totally forgot that was the name of the monkey 😂

Casey is an interesting one as since around 2013 in the UK it has been used for boys more than girls.

I do LOVE Jesse but can’t get over the religious side of the meaning being an atheist and it is pretty popular now.

Solomon is another one I quite like but again a pretty biblical meaning 🫤

Love Marley! I started a thread on here specifically about that name, lots of mixed opinions but I think it's lovely.

OrangeJ · 10/08/2023 18:45

@reporting4 if it wasn’t for that film 15 years ago I’m sure nobody would associate it with a dog 😂

Ace - dislike
Casey - sounds feminine to me. Prefer Casper.
Devin - Quite like
Emrys - fine but prefer Emmett
Marley - dislike
Sylvan - it’s fine… not my taste but not awful.

BlueDani · 10/08/2023 20:46

Marley is cute, Marlowe is also lovely

Well you could say the same about Barney and a big purple dinosaur but it's still the first thing that people will think of Wink

KirstenBlest · 10/08/2023 21:10

I've known two Barneys since the 1980s. The name doesn't make me think of a purple dinosaur.

OrangeJ · 10/08/2023 21:41

Me neither. I also love Barney but it’s the name of a close friends dog so that’s the first thing I think of lol.

Very true as Marley doesn't appear on the top dog name list whereas Alfie, Charlie, Teddy do and they aren't considered typical dog names. Hopefully as time goes by people forget that film LOL

A Christmas Carol.

Emrys = The Witcher games/show

Busubaba · 11/08/2023 00:49

Ace - sounds like someone from Blackpool saying 'Ice'. Also Reilly Ace of spies.

Casey - fine if you are American or drive a steam train.

Devin - Aramis Devin the original men's friagrance was lovely. Not for a name though .

Emrys - no
Marley - awful.
Sylvan - dreadful .

AuntMarch · 11/08/2023 01:01

Ace just makes me think Red Dwarf.
I can't help but think people will pull a bit of a face when they hear about "grown up Ace" and assume he's gone with it as a nickname for something because he's a bit of a prick 🙈. Asa is much nicer imo, as pp said.

Others aren't my taste but not awful. Have a female cousin Casey so always think feminine but I know really that it has always been neutral.

Marley doesn't make me think dog. I've never watched the film and never met a dog called Marley. I know a child called Marley though, and he is adorable, so that has influenced me there I think.

mathanxiety · 11/08/2023 03:20

I think they're all fine, except for Ace.

Suggestions:
Finley
Everett
Bennett
Carson
Carter
Emerson
Anderson
Jackson
Campbell
Edison
Finch
Beau
Dexter
Lincoln
Brady
Colby
Holden
Kingsley
Quincy
Davis
Hendrix
Crusoe
Dashiell
Wyatt
Truman
Grayson
Landon
Deveraux
Denzel
Kiefer
Marshall
Reid

WhereshallIwander · 11/08/2023 03:52

I don't like any of them sorry or the suggestions other posters have written down.

LostInTheColonies · 11/08/2023 03:55

Like Emrys and Sylvan. Others are a bit grim.

And came across brothers in Ecuador (relevant) called Charles and Darwin (both said with a Spanish accent); father was a park ranger.

What about
Tarn
Kester
Torin
Taliesin

SomewhereWithSomeone · 11/08/2023 04:14

I have a friend called Casey so I’m fond of that name.

Ace - I know one, name is accepted by peers even though it's too "Top Gun" for me, but it's one of the better ones on your list
Casey - Never taught one, thought it was a girl's name, Americano
Devin - Okay, maybe the Devon I teach meant this instead
Emrys - Merlin's alter ego?
Marley - only taught a girl, dead dog film, A Christmas Carol (KS4 do Dickens still so would avoid for this reason or they'll be going Woooo at him)
Sylvan - is okay, I only know the French Sylvain
Darwin - nope, go for Sawyer instead

Ace has aced it out of a bad bunch
Devin/Sylvan maybe

BungaBungaBung · 12/08/2023 05:25

Sylvan is like Sylvanian family

3rdtimemumma · 12/08/2023 05:41

I'm sorry but I don't like them. I think they all sound like names the naughty kid in the class would have 😬😬 can imagine my kids coming home saying "you never guess what ace did today" etc. They just all sound a bit low-class somehow to me. Sorry. Been wondering whether to post this, but you asked opinions.

I agree but was too scared to say. 😜

I'm emboldened. Nothing classy about any of them - sorry.
