We've finally managed to narrow down our list and arr deciding between either of these first names for our son, due this month. Middle name is John. Which first name do you prefer, Edward or Alexander, which sounds more classic to you? Thank you in advance!

Alexander

Alexander!

NuffSaidSam · 02/08/2023 18:57

They're both classic names. I personally wouldn't use either because they're both so common.

Of the two I prefer Alexander, better nickname options, including AJ which is both cute for a baby and cool for a teen.

Alexander all the way!

Irishmummy6363 · 02/08/2023 19:25

Alexander but I love Edward too :)

Geranium1984 · 02/08/2023 19:46

Love both! We called our first Edward and just had DD2, Alexander would have been the name we chose had she been a boy.
Edward has more nicknames if that's a point.

FatCatatPaddingtonStation · 02/08/2023 19:48

Edward!

FayCarew · 02/08/2023 20:04

Edward but I think that Teddy is overused. Dislike Ned. Ed/Eddy/Eddie are fine

Alexander

Alexander for sure! Edward is also nice though so you can’t go wrong…

Edward by a country mile. Lovely name.

Hawkins009 · 02/08/2023 20:23

Due to the historical Alexander the great.

Edward

Hanasmother · 02/08/2023 21:17

Edward, of course! it's historical, elegant and to be honest i'm so obsessed with this name :)

LlynTegid · 02/08/2023 21:18

Edward goes better with John I think.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/08/2023 22:08

Lovely choices - I can see why you are having a hard time picking! Both work with John and both are timeless classics so you can't go wrong for your DS in that regard (they are both always in the top 100 historically so no- one will be able make any assumptions about DS background or age which as a nice benefit to a name imo).

Both also benefit from lots of nn choice if he happens to dislike the full version too - though having said that most Alexander's and Edward's still seem to go by Alex and Ed respectively, so maybe think about what diminutive you like best or dislike the least! Certainly as a 4 syllable name, Alexander is very likely to get shortened and you'd probably need to introduce DS as something different from the beginning - Xander or Teddy etc, if you want to decrease the chance of Alex or Ed.

Coffeeandcakemum · 02/08/2023 22:23

Alexander

continentallentil · 03/08/2023 00:28

They are both classic.. and very popular

Alexander nn Sandy or Al

BasiliskStare · 03/08/2023 00:55

Edward any day of the week - but I don't think you can go wrong with either.

PurBal · 03/08/2023 01:01

We very nearly had an Alexander John. But we decided against it. I prefer Edward (but couldn’t use it) as Alexander is a few too many syllables and I like being able to use the “full” name.
