Hi, I’ve posted on this topic before but I’m still so unsure on names!

I wonder what your thoughts are on the name Brooks and what ‘category’ you would put it in?

I’m not a fan of the s on the end, plus the only Brooke I know is female.

rubyslippers · 31/07/2023 08:49

I’ve heard the name Brooke for both a girl and a boy so it’s unisex I think
I’ve not heard of Brooks as a name and honestly it’s not great

WhatTheFlipToDo · 31/07/2023 08:50

With the ‘s’ at the end, it sounds to me like a surname. Brooke is a lovely girls name. It’s definitely quirky but not in the ‘bloody ridiculous’ category. 🙂

marmite2023 · 31/07/2023 08:51

I know a cat called Brooks. She’s massive and a good hunter.

maddingcrow · 31/07/2023 08:56

Sounds like an surname as first name in the vein of Hunter, Parker etc. so I would think of it as an American name.

Thelondonone · 31/07/2023 09:13

It’s a trainer brand. Brook is fine, though in the ‘American’ sounding camp. It’s a no from me.

JellyDeels · 31/07/2023 13:09

Yeah it's a hard no from me I'm afraid. It's way too try-hard. Brooks is exclusively a surname and sounds ridiculous as a first name.

Guineapigwoes · 31/07/2023 13:12

I think you could get away with Brook, although be prepared for a life of people adding an “E” at the end and assuming your boy is a girl.

Brooks sounds dreadful

BettyRoodBoy · 31/07/2023 13:20

Reminds me of the sexual health clinic Brook.

BritInAus · 31/07/2023 13:35

Yep, brand of trainers.

afrenchmum · 31/07/2023 17:07

It’s a pro golfer Brooks Koepka and quite a popular name in America. Definitely an established name over there but not so much of an established surname name this side of the pond. I wouldn’t use Brook it’s way to girly. Brooks has a lot more presence for a boy in my opinion.

Guess it hasn’t gone down too well on here, but if Brooks is try hard, names that get a lot of praise on here such as Jago, Quentin and the likes, certainly strike me as so. It’s all subjective I guess!

Brooks is a surname, Brooke/Brook is a lovely girls name.

how about Brock for something similar

Jackonary · 31/07/2023 21:08

I would think of it as a surname as first name/American sounding name. It is not my taste (but I don't like any of them) - if you do I think it is fine.

justwantsomesun · 31/07/2023 21:09

It's quite hard to pronounce in some accents. I'm Scottish so it comes out Broooooookes Smile

Emmamoo89 · 31/07/2023 21:12

I don't like it. But if you do that's all that matters.

SunshineAndFizz · 31/07/2023 21:22

Definitely sounds like a surname (or an American name).

If you're in the UK he'd spend his whole life saying "with an S on the end" every time he gives his name which I imagine being very tedious.

This thread was last week. Is it another chatGPT trial run Hmm.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 31/07/2023 21:25

Just makes me think of The Shawshank Redemption, to be honest... that poor man carving 'Brooks was here' before hanging himself 😥

TRC11 · 31/07/2023 22:35

I love it.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 31/07/2023 23:26
