Hi, I’ve narrowed my shortlist down to 8 names but I’m struggling to narrow it down any further - hoping to get down to a top 3. Any opinions on any of these names would be very welcome! Thanks in advance :)

Adelina
Adeline
Antonia
Cordelia
Evangeline
Helena
Romilly
Theodora

I love Romilly, Helena and Antonia all very pretty and sweet yet also elegant and sophisticated.

Epicstorm · 24/07/2023 23:45

Romilly and Helena are my favourites but I’d be concerned about Helena being mispronounced. Would it be Helen a or Hel ena . Much prefer the second. Wonder if Romy/ Romilly is going to become popular. That may or may not matter to you but it’s something I would consider.

RosieBurdock · 24/07/2023 23:50

Adeline is my favourite

BungleandGeorge · 25/07/2023 00:12

I like Helena, pronounced Helen-a

OliviaFlaversham · 25/07/2023 00:32

Helena hand-basket (but if I could unhear that, this would be my favourite). I like the pn Hell-EN-uh with emphasis on second syllable too.

Evangeline I used to love but know so many Evies/Eves/Evas that I’m not sure if I still do. Plus I’d hate anyone to shorten it to Vang.

Cordelia is strange as it had quite a harsh sounding beginning then a frilly ending.

Adeline is great-fresh sounding yet familiar because of Madeline being pretty popular.

Adelina- how is this pn? Is it Adaleena? Like it.

mathanxiety · 25/07/2023 01:00

Antonia
Helena
Theodora

...are my favourites.

continentallentil · 25/07/2023 01:04

Antonia
Cordelia
Helena
in that order

Adelina - v fussy, but if you tweaked to Adela I’d make that no.1
Adeline - fine, quite popular
Antonia - underused and elegant,
Cordelia - lovely
Evangeline - no because she’ll be one of a zillion Evies
Helena - nice
Romilly - ok, very of the minute, but fussy
Theodora - done to death when you add in all the Thea, Theos and Theodores. Dorothea is more unusual

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 25/07/2023 01:04

Adelina - bin
Adeline - bin

Adela? Adele? Prefer Clementine

Antonia - ok nn will end up being Toni. Prefer Aurélia ("golden")

Cordelia - no, prefer Ophelia, Cecilia, Lydia

Evangeline - yes (although will always remind me of Nanny McPhee)

Helena - yes, Bonham-Carter aside

Romilly - bin (Romiley, Stockport)

Theodora - the explorer, Robbie Williams's DD nn Teddy?
Prefer Dorothea/Thea

  1. Antonia
  2. Evangeline
  3. Helena

Adelina
Adeline
Antonia
Cordelia
Evangeline
Helena
Romilly
Theodora

I love Cordelia, Evangeline, Helena and Romilly. I agree Dorothea is more unique than Theodora.

ThePatriarchyIsNotAboutHorses · 25/07/2023 08:41

Adelina - sounds clunky
Adeline - better than above but not great
Antonia - classically wlega
Cordelia - a bit old lady like
Evangeline - try too hard to be classy
Helena - love this
Romilly - quite like
Theodora - not a massive fan

KirstenBlest · 25/07/2023 09:03

Adelina - don't like
Adeline - don't like
Antonia - like but don't like Toni
Cordelia -like

Evangeline- like
Helena- like
Romilly- like, and nn romy
Theodora- like

Vexxa · 25/07/2023 12:18

Really like Antonia, Adeline, Helena and Evangeline.
Theodora is ok but I prefer Dorothea - to me it's prettier and I love the character in Middlemarch.

Coronationstation · 25/07/2023 12:44

Adelina - too frilly and sounds a bit made up to be different from Adeline
Adeline - ok(ish)
Antonia - feels dated and not in a trendy way
Cordelia - too posh and too frilly (unless you are posh)
Evangeline - one of many Evies
Helena - will get mispronounced between Hel-ay-na and Helen-a and even E-lay-na
Romilly - you've clearly never been to Stockport!
Theodora - too many Theos and Theas around at the moment already

Weefreetiffany · 25/07/2023 12:46

What about Alina?

PickledScrump · 25/07/2023 15:32

Evangeline is the only one out of your list that I like. It’s a beautiful name.

SquigglePigs · 25/07/2023 16:14

Adelina - I like this and like Addie as a nickname
Adeline - same as above - prefer this of the two of them
Antonia - really like
Cordelia - really dislike
Evangeline - don't really like, seems a bit fussy
Helena - love and it was on my short list. It can be pronounced 2 ways but I have a name that is rarely pronounced correctly on first sight and it's really not a big deal
Romilly - don't particularly like
Theodora - like but maybe a little fussy, nicknames to Thea or Dora nicely though

Top three would be:

Adeline
Helena
Antonia

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 25/07/2023 17:21

Cordelia x 100
Then Evangeline. But much further down!
