Alec or Axel for a boy? I know there’s ‘Alex’ but there’s lots of Alexs

Alec
Wouldn’t have Axel because of Axl Rose 😳

determinedtomakethiswork · 21/07/2023 18:01

Alec is incredibly old-fashioned isn't it?

FFSwhatisthis · 21/07/2023 18:03

Alec Baldwin.

it's not much better than calling him Alan. But it a LOT better than Axel. That's 'rough'

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 21/07/2023 18:04

Alec!

YallaYallaaa · 21/07/2023 18:07

I like Alec!

Not Axel so much, it makes me think of the things wheels attach to.

BarelyLiterate · 21/07/2023 18:09

I like Alec. Good, sound, proper British name. Alec is the bloke who knows how to fix your washing machine.

Axel sounds German, but not in a bad way.

Rach247 · 21/07/2023 18:10

Alec is a perfectly normal variation on Alex in Scotland. Personally prefer Alex but both are nice.

I think Axel is absolutely awful.

LilyLemonade · 21/07/2023 18:10

I quite like Axel.

What about Alexis, Ansel or Anton?

JustMaggie · 21/07/2023 18:25

Definitely go with Alec

windowof · 21/07/2023 18:35

Alec is a really classic Scottish name so perfect if you have Scottish roots (or just want to show a bit of appreciation to Scotland)
Axel is a totally different name but still nice in my opinion. It makes me think of the teenage character from The Middle! Where the mum says she tried to give her kids unusual names but they just kind of ended up normal kids anyway 😍

shoopshoopdedoo · 21/07/2023 21:50

Alec is nice. Not keen on Axel.

Awrite · 21/07/2023 21:54

In Scotland, the older generation tend to call Alex's Alec so you could go for Alexander on birthday certificate, nickname Alec.

OopsieeDaisy · 21/07/2023 23:36

I personally don’t know of any Alex’s and much prefer that to Axel or Alec. Alex is a nice, classic name and a bit underused if anything - if you prefer it I’d go with it!

continentallentil · 22/07/2023 01:09

Alexander nn Alec - good to start a variation on all the Alexs

Axel is just too aging rock star

LadyKX · 22/07/2023 01:16

Axel for me.
Alec is dullsville central.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/07/2023 01:30

Alec for me (even better if a nn for timeless Alexander). Plus once he starts answering adults back he'll be a "smart Alec!" 😂I agree there seem to be a lot of Alex's of all ages.

Unless you have really obvious Scandi or Germanic heritage (in which case I think it works as Euro cool), Axel/Axl will always sound like a vehicle part or a heavy rock icon to me.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 26/07/2023 23:28

Axel is awful.
He's a know it all, a smart Alec. So no.
