I know none, not one Alexander and not one Alexandra and it is the name we have chosen (depending on gender) for LO, but just recently I've seen Alexander/Alexander/Alexia on a lot of names threads so was wondering if it's goign to suddenly be everywhere if I use it.

Forgot, my parents neighbour is called Alec.

Alexander in Scotland is also shortened to Eck.

And Sandy, Fimbo. Neighbours little boy was called Sandy which always made me think of him as a wire-haired terrier somehow

Calling your child Alex is asking for Trouble!! Trust me.. I have been doing a study... informal, but a study nonetheless!

My daughter (11 months). We call her Alexandra - it doesn't take all that long to say. Since we live in the Czech Republic, though, it's only a matter of time before she's Sasha (Czechs call her that - or Sashenka - already, since it's anaethma to call a baby by a non-diminutive name), although I'd rather stick with Alexandra. Nothing against Sasha, but it doesn't feel like her name.

  • my second cousin (about 33?) who as far as I know doesn't shorten it either.

I have 2 nephews (one on Dh's side one on mine) called Alex. One's 22, the other's 17. And DD (18) has Alexandra as a middle name.
There's currently only one Alex (a boy, in Year 5) at the junior school I work at, there was also a girl called Alex in the same year who's now left - I've been there over 10 years & can think of 7 other children called Alex (3 girls 4 boys), so that's 9 out of about 700.
