How many Alex's do you know?

I know none, not one Alexander and not one Alexandra and it is the name we have chosen (depending on gender) for LO, but just recently I've seen Alexander/Alexander/Alexia on a lot of names threads so was wondering if it's goign to suddenly be everywhere if I use it.

it's ds1's name (2.9yo)

despite it always gracing the list of top 10 boys' names, we rarely come across other alexes

most his age are very definitely alexanders (or xanders) - to the point that lips curl when their names are abbreviated. alex seems a bit out of favour atm

but our is def an alex

in fact, come to think of it i can't think of another one we know (although several of our own age)

Tutter · 25/02/2008 20:02

alexes?

alexs?

hmmmmmmmmm.....

dizzydixies · 25/02/2008 20:04

know and alexia and alexa too for slight variation?

Celery · 25/02/2008 20:07

I'm alex, 33. I deliberately chose a pretty flowery name for my daughter because of this! I like it now, but growing up with a unisex name wasn't that fun for me.

HarrogateMum · 25/02/2008 20:10

I have an Alex, aged 3 (boy). I also know a grown up lady (doesnt that sound funny) called Alex, about my age (35) and another little boy called Alex who is about 5. Thats it, I think it is a lovely name (obviously)

DiscoDizzy · 25/02/2008 20:11

16 yr old girl (our babysitter)

JingleyJen · 25/02/2008 20:11

no adults didn't know any children
DS2 is Alexander
there are going to be 3 in his class

Olihan · 25/02/2008 20:11

I did this with ds1's name. Didn't know a single one, had never taught one now every other child has the same name as him.

I know 5 Alexs ranging from 15mo to 10yo, all boys.

ratbunny · 25/02/2008 20:12

there are loads of little Alexs about!

no female Alexs though..

but love ms appropriate's Alessandro What a great name!

dosydot · 25/02/2008 20:27

4 in my family[shock) 3 male one female
I also have a couple of friends alex and know 3 under 5's
I think I must be a magnet for people named alex

fizzbuzz · 25/02/2008 20:30

DD1 is 5 and she hasn't been in a nursery class or school class with an Alexander or Alexandra. She was going to be Alexander if she had been a boy.

Spidermama · 26/02/2008 11:44

Upmteen. I like the name though. I think I'd go for Lexy for the shortened version.

Anna8888 · 26/02/2008 11:46

My elder stepson is Alexandre. I think it's OK but a bit dull and there are lots about in Paris.

VictorianSqualor · 26/02/2008 11:46

Lexy for a boy or a girl spidermama? or both?

OP posts:
choosyfloosy · 26/02/2008 12:13

It's a lovely name. I know a 4 year old male, a 5 year old male and a 38 year old female. But really, what's not to like? Alex is fantastic and fits a lot of personalities IMO. I have a thing for Alessia (Italian version i guess) but only because of a Dick Francis novel, which is a bit low-rent.

captainmummy · 26/02/2008 12:14

Only 1 - but he's mine!!!

(and it;s not alexander!

dizzydixies · 26/02/2008 12:18

Lexie is for a girl - we picked it as is means sparkling in scottish
we gave her Alexandra as her sister has Isabella for Ella
I prefer the Lexie spelling to Lexy but its just personal preference - I felt Lexy was to close to sexy.

Lex would be fine for a boy too

Listmaker · 26/02/2008 12:23

Like dizzydixies I have an Alexandra shortened to Lexie and I have never come across another Lexie yet!

I don't know any other girls called Alexandra but a few Alexs as boys.

But as others have said if you like it who cares how many there are around?! My other dd is called Maddie and I thought that would be fairly uncommon but when she started pre-school there were 3 of them there!

dizzydixies · 26/02/2008 12:26

great choice listmaker lovely names

VictorianSqualor · 26/02/2008 12:51

The only Lexie I had ever heard of was from Monarch of the Glen

Hello VS!

I will 'fess up to you - My name is Alexandra - and I feel like Celery further down - it is quite hard having a unisex name - at least I think it is for a girl called Alex as everyone, especially outside UK, assumes I'm a bloke (email contact - I don't look like a bloke!) But I do think its quite a pretty name for a girl, and if it wasn't mine, I would def consider it for a boy. And there's loads of ways of shortening it - I get Lexy, Alex, Al etc etc. I don't know any other Alexes (?) either my age (34) or younger.
