Calvin(First name) Finlay(Middle name)

So I think we’ve finally settled on a first name and middle name for DS.

it’s taken a while navigating around our surname and narrowing things down(boys names are definitely so much more difficult!)

Anyway, we love Calvin(and has great nickname option with Cal!) and with us both being Scottish we wanted to give a nod to that with a Scottish middle name in Finlay

Calvin Finlay Surname

just like to hear everyone’s thoughts? We’re 39+2 and just making sure we don’t have a last minute wobble!

Sounds good to me

Lovely OP. I only know one Calvin in RL, who is now a teenager but I've recommended it a few times on here.

VerityUnreasonble · 29/06/2023 20:53

It's a lovely name!

It makes me smile though because if you shorten both "Cal Finn" it sounds a lot like Calvin too, its like his name within a name!

I like it but wouldn’t fancy the initials CF….

cocksstrideintheevening · 29/06/2023 21:07

Nice, no one will put initials together

caramac04 · 29/06/2023 21:13

Oh I do all the time

There will be a surname initial M. But what does CF mean?

On Mumsnet it cheeky f**r but to be honest, on reflection, it really isn’t something most people would even give a seconds thought to and both names are lovely.

Haha. Maybe we’ll be saying CF more than we expected 😂

Do you mind about name meanings? I'm pretty sure Calvin means bald. Finlay definitely means fair-haired. Bit of a contradiction 😆
If you're not fussed about meanings I think it's a lovely name.

We did look at meanings and would be nice if it did mean something different 😂but the reality is the meaning didn’t bother us and we just liked the names

I like it but also really like Caleb as an alternative 'Cal' name without the rhyming

QueenB5 · 29/06/2023 22:35

My godson is called Calvin, I believe it means little bald one? Which he was when he was born but now has the most gorgeous black hair. I’m may be biased but I love the name. Finlay is a great name also. I wish you all the luck with your little CFM.

Calvin is on our list too, I LOVE it, it’s a beautiful name! We like it because it’s a little bit different and has a cute familiar feel for a young boy, which will carry so well into adulthood. And he won’t have any issues with telling people how to pronounce it!

On the meaning point - TBH so many popular names have weird meanings when you actually look into it.

Cameron - crooked nose
Emily - Rival
Rebecca - To tie or snare
Tristan - sad
James - supplanter (to deceive)
Campbell - crooked mouth
etc etc

I don’t think I’ve ever cared about the meaning of someone else’s name or even looked into it! So I wouldn’t let that put you off.

Gorgeous name good luck!

Sunshine202341 · 30/06/2023 14:01

Also love Finlay too, works perfectly as a middle name

WeeSquishy · 01/07/2023 11:53

Thanks for the feedback. I still think picking boys names is so much more difficult than girls! But it feels good when you finally settle on something you both like. Hopefully between now and next week we don’t change our mind 🙃

Lovely name. But I have a Finlay so slightly biased!

cordelia16 · 01/07/2023 19:19

I love both names, but I find the repeating -in a bit rhymey when you say the full name out loud. CalVIN FINlay.

It's not awful, though. Just pointing it out.
