What do you think of the name Katerina for a baby girl?

I like it, but I imagine a lot will pronounce it Katrina.

Sugarfree23 · 24/06/2023 14:01

Was their not a German tennis player with the name?

I think it's fine but people might ask about German roots

So1invictus · 24/06/2023 14:03

Dd's middle name. Though spelled with a C here (Italy) love it.

continentallentil · 24/06/2023 19:54

I like it, and it’s clear how to pronounce it from the spelling.

Hadtocomment · 24/06/2023 19:59

Love it. Go for it.

oldnorsesaga · 24/06/2023 20:08

I like it, but prefer other names
That said Katerina (Greek) or Caterina (Italian) are non English names. I don't know how name is pronounced in Greek, but Italian language doesn't really have silent vowels. It probably isn't pronounced Kate+Rina.

StopFeckingFaffing · 24/06/2023 20:10

I really like it and agree that the pronunciation ought to be clear from the spelling

Accordionred · 24/06/2023 23:16

It will be pronounced as Ka-teh-ree-na.

Is this how most people in the Uk would pronounce it?

Well I google Katerina Witt was a German figure skater back in the day. My mum watches both skating and tennis.

It is pronounced Kat-er-ina.

EllaRaines · 25/06/2023 08:07

Lovely name.

WimpoleHat · 25/06/2023 08:09

It’s the German/Italian (depending on spelling - yours is German) version of Catherine. So people are likely to assume that you/your husband are not British. A but like a little boy being Henri - you’d immediately think “a French parent”. This may not worry you, though!

FayCarew · 25/06/2023 14:14

Nice but long. Will be Kat/Kate/Katie/Katrina etc

Yes they would. It’s phonetic

It’s not the same though, because it’s a variation on Katherine, whereas Henri is just a spelling variation.

Watchthedoormat · 25/06/2023 14:41

I like it

FayCarew · 25/06/2023 14:48

@continentallentil , it's not though is it. Henri isn't pronounced Henry, for a start.

LaraPeople · 25/06/2023 14:53

Lovely name. Beautiful choice. Why would people pronounce it Katrina??? It's obviously Kat-a-rina.
Like our fabulous heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson- KJT.

FayCarew · 25/06/2023 15:18

@LaraPeople , Ms Johnson-Thompson is Katarina, OP is asking about the name Katerina.

LaraPeople · 25/06/2023 15:28

@FayCarew I think there's barely a discernible difference. Completely negligible.

FayCarew · 25/06/2023 15:52

@LaraPeople , of course there's a difference, it's as different as Katharine and Katherine.

PurpleAirGuitar · 25/06/2023 16:50

They're not pronounced differently though - the middle syllable in every case is a schwa (although some people miss it out altogether when saying Katha/erine - I have a Catherine in my family who is really bugged by this!)

I quite like Katerina and I know how to pronounce it, but I do think people will sometimes say Katrina, especially if you don't have any obvious other-language background. I've actually known two English people with this name, but they both always went by Katie!

LaraPeople · 25/06/2023 19:10

@FayCarew Grin

FayCarew · 25/06/2023 19:17

@LaraPeople , Kate and Queight sound the same. Grin

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 25/06/2023 21:17

It's my DD's name. She is called Katya for short (pronounced as 2 syllables rather than 3).

user1492757084 · 26/06/2023 05:11

Love the name.
