Alternatives to Emily

I'm currently pregnant with my last baby, a girl.

My eldest DC suggested the name Emily and has been calling her that ever since. My DH really likes Emily.

I don't mind Emily, it's pretty. I just find it a little...boring? I think every Emily I've ever met was privileged and boring and unremarkable.

Also my other children have Irish names, so I'd probably favour an Irish name.

Can anyone suggest other names I could put forward?

Or variations/ nicknames in the vein of Emily but a bit less bland?

Other names that have been considered include: Holly, Clara, Chloe.

Emer/Eimear

Is Irish and if you squint a bit, has a look of Emily about it.

I love Emmeline, great namesake too with the suffragettes.

Emma is also nice.

Emilia is pretty but everywhere in various forms

ToBeOrNotToBee · 23/06/2023 13:15

Emmeline.

I intend to name my first daughter that precisely because of Mrs Pankhurst.

Amelie

Just pick a different name. Depending on how old your DC is, it's probably the name of their current best friend.

Not specifically Irish, but - Ariadne, Briony/Bryony, Cecily, Daphne, Ione, Marsaili, Naomi, Nathalie, Penelope, Phoebe, Rosalie, Zoe?

HappiDaze · 24/06/2023 01:39

Emily it is but you can choose a middle name that she might prefer to use one day

Westfacing · 24/06/2023 05:00

I knew an Irish Emer

Theoldwoman · 24/06/2023 05:53

I love love love Emily. My youngest would have been Emily if it had gone with our surname. It’s far from boring. It’s elegant and timeless.

What about:

Estelle?
Georgina?
Saskia?
Ella?
Laura?
Lucy?
Lillian?

EllaRaines · 24/06/2023 06:36

Everley?

Handholdplease85 · 24/06/2023 06:41

Another vote for Everley or Evelyn
or use Emily as a middle name and pick another first name that you really love
I always find it odd when people let their other children choose their baby’s names. Their choice will be heavily influenced by a random whim/tv show/current friend/celebrity it won’t be some deep considered choice.

SunSurfSand · 24/06/2023 06:43

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.

I got to have my chosen names for the older children, so I feel like I need to let DH decide this one. Especially since I don't really have a name in mind I feel equally strongly about,

I like the idea of naming her Emily and then calling her Molly. I think Molly is very sweet and I don't know any one else called that.

Some other great ideas as well- definitely food for thought!

I think naming her Emily but calling her Molly is really weird and random. Surely Milly? Molly is not a shortening of Emily. If you like Molly then call her Molly Emily.

elmooie · 24/06/2023 17:01

If you want Molly as a nickname I’d aim for something like Emira (similar to Mary which Molly stems from as well as Emily) or Melinda

LulooLemon · 24/06/2023 17:13

Amy
Amelia

Hadtocomment · 24/06/2023 20:05

Calling her one thing to appease your DH and then just calling her what you want anyway seems a bit awkward of you. Wouldn't it be better to get a name you both like, then use it? In terms of names no totally dissimilar to Emily, what about Erin? Or Ailie?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/06/2023 20:11

Naming her Emily (to be known as Molly) is like naming a child Christopher (to be known as Frank).
