Rory or Tobias?

Baby boy due next month and can’t decide between these two names - all thoughts welcome :)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Love Tobias.

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/06/2023 19:29

Rory!

Spidey66 · 22/06/2023 19:29

I prefer Rory

WhisperingAutistic · 22/06/2023 19:30

Tobias
Lots of children would pronounce Rory, Worwy when they are young or if they roll their Rs.

BeyondMyWits · 22/06/2023 19:32

Toby... I have a nephew Tobias, always known as Toby.

WideOpenSpaces · 22/06/2023 19:33

Love both Rory and Toby - not keen on Tobias.
Just wait and see what he looks like if you're really stuck?

Irishmummy6363 · 22/06/2023 19:45

Thanks so much for all the replies! I prefer Tobias but my partner prefers Rory. We have a DS and DD already and I adore my DS’s name so so much - I like both Rory and Tobias but don’t think I’ll ever love them as much! Any other ideas also welcome!

I prefer Tobias

Do you have anyone in the family who can't say R?
I like both but Rory can be tricky.

Irishmummy6363 · 22/06/2023 20:29

I have seen the R thing mentioned before but I don’t really know anyone who can’t pronounce their Rs and I think in a toddler voice it sounds really sweet!

Also I don’t mind Toby but I like Rory better than Toby and feel like a Tobias would end up getting Toby is a nickname..so should I just go for Rory as I know my husband prefers it too. I just love the longer form Tobias!

seems a real split on here, at least both seem liked! Feel Rory is more common is the only thing.

Rory is one of my favourite boy names, we can’t use it as our surname begins and ends with R so sounds comical (especially if the poor kid couldn’t say his r’s).

Tobias is nice, but will ultimately end up as Toby or Tobes.

Irishmummy6363 · 22/06/2023 20:34

Also wideopenspaces, I hear lots of people having a couple of names and seeing what fits when they are born..I’d just worry that we would disagree when he’s born and I like to have the name ready when we let friends and family know!

This was my immediate thought. Your son would only need a very slight articulation issue for him to really struggle with his own name.

(all three of my DC have needed some degree of SLT intervention, as did I as a child, so perhaps I'm hyper alert to this potential issue!)

NorthWestThree · 22/06/2023 20:37

Both GREAT NAMES! if DD had been a boy she would have been Tobias (Toby) but I love the name Rory too. The only thing for me is Rory sounds like a shortened/ nickname for something.

continentallentil · 22/06/2023 20:39

I love Rory - there are loads of them though

I really like Tobias but I am not keen on Toby and that’s quite likely to be what he gets called.

Any other options?!

continentallentil · 22/06/2023 20:41

Others..

Barnabas nn Barney
Zachary nn Zach
Laurence nn Laurie
Robert nn Robbie

Saynowt · 22/06/2023 20:47

Tobias sounds like a 1980s yuppie type to me, sorry OP.

strawberry2017 · 22/06/2023 20:48

Tobias, I like that you can have a nickname and a grown up name.
Rory is to limited

HotPenguin · 22/06/2023 20:50

I thought this was going to be about the Conservative party.

mintich · 22/06/2023 20:57

Rory because I have one!
You can't pick a name based on the off chance that toddlers (or adults with speech impediments!) mispronounce it...they aren't toddlers forever!

FayCarew · 22/06/2023 20:59

You can if either you or the other parent can't say R.

Irishmummy6363 · 22/06/2023 21:07

I like Barnaby nn Barney but my partner doesn’t and he loves Zachary/ Zach but I don’t! Boys names are so tricky. Only others we agree on but maybe don’t LOVE are Henry, Jacob and Max.

I love Tobias so that would get my vote

as alternatives Rufus or Hugo?

shadowchancesassy · 22/06/2023 21:11

Tobias. My suggestion would be Quentin 💙
