I have an old colleague with this name, and like it.
We aren't too sure if it's a bit out there
Would you pronounce it Layna or lean-ah?

Is it the same name is Lena as in Lena Headey from Game of Thrones?

I would say Lay-na

oldnorsesaga · 22/06/2023 15:37

I pronounce Layna as LAY-na, but it's worth mentioning, in many European countries, they would say LEH-na or LAY-na for Lena.

useitorlose · 22/06/2023 15:43

It could also be Leena like the ey in honey.

toastofthetown · 22/06/2023 15:45

I’d say Lay-na, though at first glance my brain read it as Lenya.

Moused · 22/06/2023 16:59

I think it's more common in some other European countries as there seems to be lena, layna, lenya variations

Just don't want it to be too much of a mouthful, or look like we are stalking an old colleague!

Seems very samey with all the Lena, Luna, Lila, Layla, type names.

Rogue1001MNer · 22/06/2023 17:17

Well, I've got an ear worm now....

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/06/2023 19:33

I think I’d say Lay-na just from looking at the spelling. I like it.

YoucancallmeKAREN · 24/06/2023 14:04

Lay-na

Yep this. It’s all very nothingy.

And in this case sounds quite made up, as in it’s a phonetic rendition of how Lena is pronounced in some parts of Europe.

FayCarew · 24/06/2023 20:07

If someone introduced themself as Leyna, would you know which spelling they used? I'd think Lena.

Moused · 25/06/2023 22:24

I guess the person I know was clear on the "lay" "nah" so I think its more likely to be confused for layla then lena

I would say 'Lay-na' as in the 'yay' sound. Which is how Billy Joel pronounces it in his song, 'All for Leyna'. I think it's a lovely name.
