Boy shortlist

I think I've reduced my list to these 7 boys names. Is 7 a shortlist?

Just looking for some opinions? First impressions? How common the name is in your area etc

Tobias - will always be Tobias at home but understand he and others may well decide to shorten it to Toby

Rufus - maybe affectionately called Roo at home

Benjamin - would be Benjamin or Benji and home but happy with Ben too

Rowan

Ezra

Zachary - happy with both Zachary and Zach

Tristan - happy with both Tristan and Tris

My favourites from your list would be Benjamin/Ben and Zachary/Zach
None overly used in this area.
The Rowans I’ve known have been girls.

How are they with your surname? Middle name choice if any?
Think it is good you have thought about shortening the names too as it happens.

Well done for getting to a shortlist.

oldnorsesaga · 22/06/2023 13:41

I like Tristan and Rufus.
Tobias and Toby is only situation where I like nickname more than full name - I like Toby more as Tobias because I dislike -ias ending. It's hard for me to pronounce it, while Toby is straightforward.

JauntyRedShoes · 22/06/2023 13:42

Tristan is my favourite. I know two in their 30’S. Don’t know any baby Tristans.
Zachary is becoming popular and I come across it a lot and it’s my nephew’s name.
I haven’t come across any one named Rufus. I like it and love Roo as a nn.
Not keen on Rowan or Tobias but don’t think they are too common.
I love Benjamin, there are 3 in my family. I don’t mind that it’s popular.
Ezra is gaining in popularity and two friends have baby Ezras - they don’t know each other. I think it would make a good middle name.
Great shortlist.

I like Benjamin and Zachary although I can’t say I know of any babies or young children with any of the names from your list. Ezra seems to be becoming very popular and is probably the only one I’d avoid if not wanting something overused.

StopFeckingFaffing · 22/06/2023 13:47

My favourites from your list are Rufus, Rowan and Zach

I much prefer Toby to Tobias

I don't like Tristan at all, I can't explain why as I don't think I've ever met a Tristan but for some reason I would expect him to be a bit of a knob!

Benjamin/ Ben is ok but very boring

Ezra is ok but currently fashionable and may not date well

SnapPop · 22/06/2023 13:52

I like Toby, Benjamin, Zach and Tristan. Not so keen on Rufus or Ezra (or Tobias). I do like Rowan but prefer it for a girl.

TenThousandSpoons · 22/06/2023 13:54

My favourite is Benjamin, then Zachary. I also like Rufus and Ezra. But agree with pp Ezra is getting popular.
I don’t like Tobias (prefer Toby but not much) or Tristan. Rowan is ok but I think if Atkinson.

justmyluck1234 · 22/06/2023 13:57

I like Zachary not to keen on the other names

Pemba · 22/06/2023 14:00

I like Benjamin, Zachary and Rufus (some may say dog's name for this but any name could be).

I don't mind Tobias, but not keen on Toby.
Ezra is OK, but I prefer Elijah or Elias.
Rowan is genuinely unisex, but the first ones I knew were girls so I can't stop thinking of it as feminine.
Tristan is quite wussy somehow.

FayCarew · 22/06/2023 14:10

They're all ok. Favourite is Ben by a mile.

wingsofabird · 22/06/2023 15:59

Really great list
top choices Ben, Rufus and Toby
least favourite is Rowan. I also prefer for a girl but I'd not use it now RoMan with an M has exploded in popularity in last couple of years. Sounds too similar.

Mumofgirls2017 · 22/06/2023 16:41

Tobias- not keen and find Toby a bit wet
Rufus- love
benjamin- ok, but boring
rowan- love
ezra- will date I think
zachary- like
tristan- bit nerdy and wet

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/06/2023 19:42

I really love Benjamin and Zachary (and their nicknames)!

Personally, I’m not keen on any of the others. Ezra sounds nice but I think it’s a bit trendy. I only know female Rowans. Toby and Rufus seem to be used a lot for dogs, although they are OK. I’m not sure why I dislike Tristan.

Irishmummy6363 · 22/06/2023 21:12

I like Tobias!
I think of Rufus as a dog name, sorry!
Benjamin and Benji I like, not so keen on Ben.
Others are fine, but don’t love.

MiniEggsAllYear · 22/06/2023 21:16

My favourite from your list is Ezra.
It would be Toby if it was just Toby, love that, but not a fan of Tobias.

Lena92 · 23/06/2023 08:33

My Rowan is a boy and it's never bothered me it's unisex. It is more popular for boys, I think the ratio in England is something like 4:1 for boys v girls called Rowan.

We've met both another boy and a girl Rowan at baby classes, we also know a Benjamin, Zach and Tobias. I also know an Ezra but she's a girl.

I don't love Rufus (I do like the nickname Roo!) or Tristan but the others are all nice.

PickledScrump · 23/06/2023 12:06

Absolutely love Tristan. Don’t know any but was on my shortlist for a boy name, I had all girls.

I liked Tobias for a while but there 3 in my daughters year (now in secondary school) and 2 of them are really horrible so put me off.

Benjamin is nice and safe, I don’t think it’s too overused. Only one in my daughters year.

Zach/Zachary I know lots of and I’m not a big fan of the name.

Rufus is cute

I really don’t like Rowan, it seems to be everywhere at the moment and I don’t see the appeal. I don’t know any Ezras but don’t like the name.

CallieQ · 23/06/2023 12:26

Ben or Rowan

CakeRattleandRoll · 26/06/2023 14:18

Love Rufus. Don't know any.
Tobias and Tristan also great. DS (10) has a good friend Toby.
Know several Bens and one Zachary, but no Rowans or Ezras.
