Baby name regret

I have a 5 year old who I really really regret the name of. So much so I often try to use different nicknames. Just wondering if anyone else had this as their child go older and how they came to terms with the fact that they had definitely chosen the wrong name.

I've got a Benjamin but he's always been a Ben and prefers it. (Except his paternal grandmother who called him Benjamin until she died and he accepted that.)

I call him Ben, Benjo, Boo, Bub, Benjy, Benjo-boo, Boodles, Boodle-doo and Boods. Or a variation of our surname (think 'little Smithy' despite him pushing 6ft 5 at 15!) Mainly Ben or Boods though.

It's a great name, really classic. But I am biased..

Thanks so much everyone it does help to hear some positivity about it!
@EmmaAmeliasMum i think you hit the nail on the head for me. My parents had a negative opinion on all but one of my children’s names and bens in particular as I have a relative with the same name they thought it was ridiculous. I thInk people are right when they say about anxiety etc. thanks for all of your lovely messages

I love Benjamin, so many wonderful namesakes from history too.

Its strong, classic and handsome.

Ben is a great name for a little boy or a grown man. An easy one to spell and one that can't get shortened any further!

If it helps - we chose ds's name very quickly. It just sounded right. It's a name that we hadn't even discussed in the previous 9 months!!! He's 18 now. And he inhabits his name. I have regrets that we didn't go for another name that we liked - but at the end of the day he's quite happy and I love him so it's all good...

Ben is the best name ever!

^ this! I love it!

Muncha · 13/06/2023 18:56

It's a lovely name. I'd call him Jammin

Astrid101 · 16/06/2023 20:29

I think you’ve chosen a fabulous name, like PP said it’s timeless. Most likely anxiety with the regret. Benji is such a cute nickname, shame he’s not a fan. Honestly I think I might put Benjamin on my name list now that I am thinking on it…

Hoping the worry passes OP.

Ben is a perfect name. It’s timeless, classless and absolutely lovely. You couldn’t have chosen a better name

Momo18 · 16/06/2023 20:40

It's actually a lovely name, so good choice. I gave my son's names I loved at the time, however I wouldn't choose them now as they are seen as 'chavy'. I think it's common to move on from your original choice as tastes change over the years. Maybe it's time to just accept the name? I don't give my son's much thought other than acknowledging in my head it is what it is. They aren't bad names I chose, my kids like them so no harm done. You chose a nice name op :)

Hollyppp · 17/06/2023 22:45

It’s a lovely name! Focus on how much you love your son and move on from obsessing on the name x

merderforlife · 18/06/2023 10:28

I really like Ben, it makes me think if a hunky fireman. no idea why!

I chose my DS1 name after my Grandad not realising quite how ridiculously popular it was then.

my DS2 has a name I love and gives similar Ben vibes, handsome, hunky etc.

Funnily enough I've never mentioned my name regret to anyone that knows DS1 but he has chosen to go by a totally unrelated name to friends.

Which grandad name did you choose?

sel2223 · 28/08/2024 16:33

Don't let other people project their negative thoughts onto you, OP

I absolutely love Benjamin/Ben.... one of my favourite boys names

RoseApp · 30/08/2024 20:36

My mother settled on Susan after the family blocked everything else. I loathed it from the day I was born. At 18 I changed my name to Ellen. Then found out that this had been my mother’s original choice. I didn’t know this and she had never told me. I then did my family tree and found out it had been a family make for generations. She didn’t know this either.

I know a Benjamin and a Ben both very succesful

Thriving30 · 31/08/2024 04:55

I have a brother called Benjamin and we never ever call him it! To family, friends and teachers he's always been Ben. Not really thought about why. I really like his name.

I think you need to accept that once given, your child’s name is their business. You not liking it now is irrelevant. They aren’t a doll.

This! You chose to name him Benjamin - which is a lovely name btw - you now have to stick with it. If he wants to be called Ben then that is what you call him.

CarmelaBrunella · 31/08/2024 07:19

I'm just going to add that Benjamin is a lovely, classic name, and Ben is great! Very strong.
I thought you were going to say something flash in the pan like Teddy or Sonny or Jaxxon.
It's lovely!

Alwaystired2023 · 31/08/2024 07:21

Love the name Benjamin, and Ben, and know many lovely people called Benjamin

Would have loved Benjamin for a boy myself

Cornishmama1990 · 31/08/2024 07:22

My parents changed my name when I was 8! No reason other than they liked it.

ThreeLuckyStars · 06/10/2024 16:07

Excellent name- hope you’re feeling better about it these days! ❤️

PadstowGirl · 06/10/2024 23:31

Ben, Sam and Dan.
Lovely names that fit any situation.
Which other names did you have in mind?
