Baby girl is due in the next couple of weeks, and names are still swirling around and favourites changing every couple of days..

For context she’s half-Irish and has an older sister called Indigo (Indi). We like flowing names, nature names (not absurd ones), names that can be shortened.. Can’t start with a hard C sound cos surname does.

Recently:

Alannah, probably known as Lana/Lanah

Amber, possible nickname Bea (from Bambi which is what I end up calling a little Amber we know)

Today’s newcomer, Eleni known as Leni (can’t have nn Ellie)

She was Jasmine for ages, originally an honour name for a friend but then we really liked it, now I think it’s a bit princessy (husband has no Aladdin connotations but I do!)

Also Rosie short for Róisín has been on the table, but again potentially a bit floral and just not ‘strong’ enough.

Opinions and suggestions gratefully received! Thank you :-)

I have an Iris and I think that fits the bill - it's pretty and girly but a bit edgier than some of the other flower names. Plus it would be cute with Indi!

FWIW one of my sons has an alliteration name and I literally didn't notice until he was about one, nobody has ever mentioned it.

2 Irish names come to mind.
Fiadh (pronounced 'fee-ah'). Anglicised spelling "Fia".
Comes from the Irish for "deer".

Siofra (pronounced 'shee-fra') Means elf or fairy

Fia is actually the modern Irish spelling of deer @Aerielview, it's not an anglicisation, though the Fiadh spelling is more widely used as a name. Both spellings have or had the additional meaning of wild, and Fiadh the additional meaning of respect or esteem. It only started being used as a name recently but is very popular in Ireland now.
Síofra is also used to mean changeling.

Thank you so much, some gorgeous suggestions!

Some really lovely ones people have mentioned have been used by friends already eg Willow and Wren. Some don’t sound right with our surname eg I love Hazel and Cara but they just wouldn’t work. Some DH and I don’t agree on eg he likes Lara and Lois, I love Sylvie, Sage, Robyn, even Olive. Some I can’t think of nice nicknames for (eg Celeste.. Celi, Lester 😂) and I know I’m a nicknamer.

I think I sort of like Saffron, but not sure about Saff/Saffi. Ditto Linea/Linnaea, Demetra and Tula.. Sort of like but not sure. DH particularly likes Ember, but looking at forums it seems a lot of people associate it with dying (while I/we would see it as the ever-glowing, steady spark from which fire can always rise..).

Yasmin I think is a bit ‘exotic’, I’ve only ever known an Arabic Yasmin and it feels a bit like nicking a name from someone else’s culture.. ditto the lovely Welsh options eg Rhiannon, Elwen etc.

@KirstenBlest what pronounciation issues do you foresee with Eleni? (I appreciate this is also totally nicked from an unrelated culture to us)

@bluebirdsongs was it just Leni you liked or was it short for something?

@BeverlyHa Ruah was the name she had first and for ages, my daughter loves it! But put off by rua being ‘road’ in Portuguese/Latin and ruadh being ‘red’ in Irish.

@DurhamDurham I absolutely love Alba, but the Spanish one, and living in UK people are more likely to make a Scottish association I think.. or a brand of radio 🤷‍♀️

@ghislaine defo love this vibe but Sorrel sounds a bit apologetic and Linden is a boy’s name to me.

@Aerielview i think Fia sounds too much like ‘fear’ where we live. Síofra is a very cool name but tooo much correcting pronounciation/spelling issues!

@Mumofgirls2017 yes right vibe! None quite right though, totally the story of all this name-hunting. Thank you for trying though!

Finally I came across Solenne, could be nickname Leni and would celebrate the solstice, which at this rate I reckon she might stay in until! What do people think of that?

Thanks so much for all your thoughts, really appreciated.

@Magenpie100 , I work with an Eleni. It gets said as Elenny by her, but some say Elleny to rhyme with Melanie and some say Elainy, and some say something in between.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 08/06/2023 16:12

My first thought was Romilly, nn Romy. Indigo and Romilly, or Indi and Romy, sound great together to me!

FatGirlSwim · 08/06/2023 17:48

In Wales Eleni (eh-lenny) means ‘this year’.

We have pronunciation differences with Elena (El-enna in Wales as opposed to Eh-lay-na) so I guess the same?

KirstenBlest · 08/06/2023 17:53

As a Welsh speaker, I see Eleni as 'this year' too, @FatGirlSwim , and say Elena as El-enna or 'Lenna.
