Names like Polly

Want to go back to the drawing board to make sure we’re not missing anything.

I love Polly - I love that it’s simple, classic, instantly recognisable but not too overused and has a fun vibe to it.
DH has vetoed it.

Are there any names with a similar vibe that I may be missing? Not keen on Molly, Holly etc so don’t necessarily mean names that sound similar. Also dislike the names it’s derived from or a nn for - Mary, Pauline, Penelope, Phoebe etc. Feel I have trawled through all the names lists but need to be sure there’s nothing out there that has been overlooked!

thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Polly sounds kind of retro cool to my ear. I think similar-ish names would be Pearl, Peggy, Marilyn, Dotty, Audrey, Violet, Etta, Rose/Rosa.

@NooNakedJacuzziness funny you should mention Heidi, it’s our current forerunner (DH favourite)

@OverTheCountryClub thanks for your lovely suggestions! Particularly like Dotty and Etta, although not sure I’m keen on the longer versions of these names. Rose is beautiful, we both love it, but twin brother will be Alfred and don’t think we could have a Fred and Rose unfortunately 😂🙈

Nothing helpful to add except my daughter is Polly (16) and she loves her name. My husband also vetoed at first but he came round eventually as I pointed out that it wasn't wacky and was actually a traditional name.

@Neverknowinglysensible I don’t think even he knows! I think he views it as being a bit old fashioned and says it just doesn’t feel/sit right with him :(

I do understand, names are so emotional. For example, June, Shirley, etc. are back, but I would be horrified if someone I knew named their child those!
i had great aunts called Mary and Dorothea (Molly and Dolly) who would also both answer to Polly- mainly due to deafness - which is possibly why I like the name so much. I also had a very much loved Auntie Sally.

Binfire · 03/06/2023 21:46

My daughter is called Nancy and I often call her Polly (or Polly Pocket). Along a similar vein:
Poppy
Penny
Pippa
Suzie
Sally
Claudia/ Claudie
Heidi
Lily
Tessa

So many gorgeous names on this thread! Would he go for Pollyanna?
I love Annie, Thea, Kitty, Nell, Mabel, Iris - all fantastic suggestions.
