Cousins names

My DD was named after a very dear family member, my brother is expecting DD later this year and wants to use a variation of the name to also honour the relative.
I have no issue with this but just wondered if this had happened in any other families? Do you know / have cousins with the same / similar names? Has it been an issue?

I have a few cousins with the same names. I don't ever remember it causing any issues.

It was always previously very common. DH comes from a huge family (PIL were one of 15 and 9) and he has multiple cousins all called after grandparents. No issues at all.

We have a few family names, it’s never been a problem, and I think it’s quite sweet.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/06/2023 21:00

It depends on the name.
Louise and Louisa might be a bit too close, Harriet and Henrietta ok.

Rarely will anyone outside the immediate family be even aware. As long as the parents are ok, what does it matter?

We've got 4 boys called James and 3 people called Charlie/Charley in our family. It's never been a problem

Not so great for the grandparents having two granddaughters with the same name.

icanlovemebetterthanyoucan · 04/06/2023 23:18

this is fine in our family - we’ve got loads of repetition of names. I don’t see why the first one to have kids would be the only one allowed to use a family name? That seems very unfair.

SoShallINever · 06/06/2023 20:18

My Granny had 14 children, 5 of her grandaughters (myself and 4 cousins) were named after her and we have exactly the same first name. 😂.

MerryChristmasToYou · 06/06/2023 20:29

@SoShallINever , how many grandchildren does she have?

Do you go by variations on the name or are you all called Granny?

Snugglemonkey · 06/06/2023 20:40

My daughter shares a name with my cousin's daughter, albeit we opted for different spellings.

Another cousin has a child named the same as my brother's son. Exactly the same.

We have one each of Seamus, James, Patrick, Pádraig, Joseph, Matthew and Thomas and so many have those names as middle names due to them being traditional family names for us.

We have an Alice, Alicia and Allison after the same great grandmother. We have a Patricia, Poddy and Pádraigín after another grandmother.

When you have lots of cousins, names will repeat if they are family names.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 06/06/2023 21:27

DH shares his name with several cousins (PIL were ones of 15 and 9 so there are lots of family names and 70odd cousins)

Everyone, even those with unique names, are “Mary’s Zebedee” or “Peter’s James”

Even the three who were at school together so are known by Dan, Danny & Daniel to parents, partners and friends are all “Mary’s Daniel” and “Peter’s Daniel” to DH’s Gran.

I've got 32 first cousins. Three of us (me first!) used our granny's name. Two of my cousins kids have the same name as me.
There's so many of us it's not an issue.

If it's two cousins in a family it might be confusing.
