What are your thoughts on Olwen for a girl?

I like it but depends where you live.

It would seem quite old fashioned around here but it is very pretty.
If you're in welsh speaking community it would be lovely

ourflagmeansdeath · 03/06/2023 16:25

I think it's really really pretty. I also like Arwen, Anwen and Oswin which have similar sort of sounds.

CC4712 · 03/06/2023 16:27

I've never heard of it, so this was my immediate thought:

  • male and a misspelling of Owen

I personally don't like the OLW sound to it as feels like a mouthful. If you like it though, go for it.

SemperIdem · 03/06/2023 16:31

I like it

MinnieMountain · 03/06/2023 16:33

Only use it if you live in Wales. It’s a nice name but as PP have proved, people will get confused otherwise.

continentallentil · 03/06/2023 16:35

I really like it - it's slightly Arthurian, but also sounds quite contemporary.

It's an unusual name outside Wales, so you'll have to spell it a bit - but I don't think it will make people confused. It sounds pretty similar to names like Arwen and Gwen.

shortstayer · 03/06/2023 16:44

My auntie Olwen was lovely!

Awumminnscotland · 03/06/2023 17:58

I knew an Alwynne once. Less of an o (hot) sound, more of a (apple). Quite liked it.

DacwMamYnDwad · 03/06/2023 20:34

It's a very old Welsh name from the Mabinogi.
-wen names are dated - they were very popular about 80 years ago.
The Olwyn spelling is ridiculous.

Arwen and Alwyn aren't Welsh (even though Arwyn (m) and Alwen (f) are), but they may be used. Oswyn and Oswen aren't of Welsh origin either.

Alwynne is awful.

People’s laziness should not be pandered to.

As far as Welsh names go, Olwen is very straightforward forward and I cannot understand where confusion could set in.

I couldn’t potentially understand your comment if the op was suggesting Lleucu.

SemperIdem · 03/06/2023 22:02

Typos all over that post 🤦🏻‍♀️

CardiffMam · 03/06/2023 22:04

Lovely name, I know four little girls called Olwen.

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 05/06/2023 17:32

I like Welsh names, but think Olwen sounds a bit chubby and old ladyish.

TJsAunt · 06/06/2023 15:49

v old fashioned IMO

user1492757084 · 08/06/2023 07:55

Olwen is fine.
I prefer Elowen by far.

DacwMamYnDwad · 08/06/2023 10:25

I prefer Olwen to Elowen - there are so many Ellies, and also people will say EL-ow-en as opposed to El-OW-en.
Lowenna is lovely.

PizzaPastaWine · 13/06/2023 01:33

Beautiful name.

Ruthietuthie · 13/06/2023 01:45

A GORGEOUS name. I love it. And think it is easy to guess how to pronounce for those who might not be familiar with it.

salamithumbs · 13/06/2023 01:50

I don't personally like it, for no particular reason other than I just don't like the sound of it- to me it sounds sort of ungainly somehow, sorry! I don't think it would necessarily cause pronunciation problems outside of Wales though- there was one in my year at school (in Dublin) and I don't remember anyone ever getting it wrong.

Jemandthehologramsunite · 13/06/2023 01:51

No way. I had a teacher called that, we laughed when we found out and made fun of her (not something I'm proud of)

MrsMGittens · 19/03/2024 16:17

I’m going to use Olwen if I have a little girl.
My beloved Grandmother, her middle name was Olwen but we always only ever referred to her as Nanny Olwen. Her actual name was Gwyneth.
My Grandfather always called her Ol.
We are not Welsh so not sure why she had such Welsh names.
Its also a coincidence that my married name is Gittens, which is also a Welsh surname.

I just think the name Olwen is very feminine but also sophisticated. Timeless, classy name. It’s a very lovely name & I pray I have a little girl to name her that and honour my lovely nanny.

Mairzydotes · 19/03/2024 17:26

I like it.

It does make me think of owls ,I bet I'm not the only one

DisforDarkChocolate · 19/03/2024 17:32

I love Olwen. Lovely name, easy to pronounce and easy to spell.

Humphriescushion · 19/03/2024 17:48

Love it. I also like Cienwen ( think correct spelling)

RuthW · 19/03/2024 18:24

Sorry. I don't like it. There are lots of pretty Welsh names.
