Nathaniel is a lovely name, not keen on Ruben or kester prefer Kellar

Tygertiger · 17/05/2023 22:45

I heard somewhere that Kester is a version of Christopher. Personally I prefer Christopher with nn Kit. From the list, Nate is my fave but I’d use Nathan rather than Nathaniel.

@BonjourCrisette that's quite a strong reaction to Nathaniel/Nate 😁 what don't you like about it? I think of it as quite heritage, IYKWIM, but also maybe a bit American?

I'm not sure about Kester - I think I like it in principle but I sort of feel like there would be more, if it were a really good name!

I think Nathaniel sounds wet and Nate sounds like it's a short for Nathan which I really don't like.

BonjourCrisette · 17/05/2023 22:48

I actually know a really genuinely lovely small Nathan who I love to bits. So it's not bad associations or anything! I just don't much like the name.

Wobblybobb · 17/05/2023 22:48

I have a Nathan.. who we only called Nathan as we wanted to use Nate, but it was too American then (he’s now 18) so officially called him Nathan. However.. he strongly dislikes being called Nate and will only answer us if we call him Nathan. He only used to use Nate in primary school as it was quicker to write his name…

boymummy19 · 17/05/2023 22:51

I like Kester!
Never heard it before but it's a great name!

KeepOnKeepOff · 17/05/2023 22:52

Love Nate (on our list but didn’t go with our surname). Kester is bloody horrible 😬

shoopshoopdedoo · 18/05/2023 06:32

Not Kester. I think I slightly prefer Reuben from your other two options.

awakeeveeynight · 18/05/2023 06:34

Love Nathaniel but I know 2 little terrors who are Nates.

CatLoaf · 18/05/2023 09:47

Kester is a divisive one! 😵

I like Nate but really dislike Nathaniel. Reuben is nice but there’s loads of R boy names like Rowan, Robin, Ronan at the moment so may just blend into those.

I love Kester, I was in school with one and always thought it was quite a cool name.

Vinvertebrate · 18/05/2023 19:30

The novel is Precious Bane and Kester Woodseaves is a wonderful character. I love it but mainly because of the book!

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 18/05/2023 19:39

Nathaniel definitely!

orangekiwiloot · 18/05/2023 19:51

Love Kester. Knew one at school and they were such a cool dude. I love names that are 1 in a schoolful.

Rueben is a bit meh to me. Used a lot. Don't hate it but I wouldn't chose it.

Love Nathanial but will always get shortened and I'm not keen on Nate or Nat as my mate was always called!

KirstenBlest · 18/05/2023 20:50

Nathaniel is ok but too long. I don't like Nate.
Reuben is ok but gets misspelt a lot
Kester - not sure

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/05/2023 22:35

Kester - great underused name

The other two are v nice too, but Reuben v overused and Nate/Nathaniel getting v popular

CC4712 · 18/05/2023 22:42

Never heard the name Kester, but immediately thought of fester 😬

I like Nathanial the most, and then down the line Reuben, as I associate it with Paul Reubens. Obviously not everyone has the same, quirky thoughts as me though.

user1492757084 · 19/05/2023 11:56

I prefer Rupert.
Kester is unusual. I like Christopher and Christoff.

Whichwhatnow · 19/05/2023 12:03

Oh I had never heard the name Kester, thought it sounded quite nice initially but PP's mentioning it rhyming with molester/fester etc has put me right off!

I love Nate and Nathan. Nathaniel is too long for me so I'd go for Nathan on the BC personally. Reuben is nice, if a bit overly popular where I am, and I'm not sure I like Roo as a nickname.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/05/2023 22:14

Nathaniel is lovely and would be my pick. Very different style imo to the suggested Nathan - Nathaniel has a more literary, patrician feel I think. "Nay -than" is quite abrupt, "Nuh-than-yel" is less harsh sounding.

Not keen on the sound of Reuben (plus it seems suddenly quite popular) or Kester.

MsJuniper · 19/05/2023 22:16

Kester is one of my all time favourite names. Hope you go for it!

Not keen on the other two.

OneAndDon3 · 19/05/2023 22:19

I have a Nathaniel/Nate so obviously I'm biased, but I think it's great

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/05/2023 22:43

I've only ever met one Kester, and I really like it. I also like Nathaniel/Nate, but it is a very routine kind of name. Ruben is ok, just very common.

Yes I've never thought of that when I heard kester but a friend of mine was called Chester, he'll be 32/33 now but I remember him getting called uncle fester or molester at school.

CatLoaf · 20/05/2023 22:15

I really like Kester, but it does get so much bad feedback on here 🙈 Makes me v nervous to actually use it
