What are your thoughts on Matthias for a boy?

How would you pronounce it? My preferred pronunciation is Ma-thy-us

Also which spelling do you prefer? I'm torn between Matthias and Mathias though Matthias seems the more used spelling

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Mat-tay-as is how it’s pronounced in german speaking countries. Why would you want to give your son a name you cannot pronounce, it will also likely be mispronounced his whole life if you are not located in a German speaking country ? Genuinely interested by the way.

Anoana · 16/05/2023 19:49

It's a nice name, but I'd definitely pronounce it Mat-tay-us.

JediIsMyMaster · 16/05/2023 19:49

I’d pronounce it Math-EYE-uss, but I know one who pronounces it MATT-ee-uss.

I prefer Matthias as a spelling.

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/05/2023 19:52

I think it’s always pronounced Mah-thy-us in the UK (and the US). The OP isn’t in a German speaking country so how it’s said there isn’t really relevant.

It’s not common as a first name in the UK these days, but it has been - you still get schools and churches called St Matthias. And it’s a surname.

I’d stick with Matthias spelling OP. But the main think is do you like Matt? Because chances are that’s what he’ll be called.

100Bees · 16/05/2023 19:53

I know one pronounced math-ee-us. I find it a bit of a mouthful. Ma- TEY-us sounds better.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/05/2023 19:54

I have no idea why the German pronunciation would be relevant. I also would pronounce it Math-EYE-us, and prefer the Matthias spelling. It's a biblical name, unusual but not weird. I like it!

Infusionist · 16/05/2023 19:58

The German pronunciation is relevant because it seems to be a more common name there than here. I’ve met two both of whom are German, so I’d instinctively pronounce it like they do: Matt EYE us.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 16/05/2023 20:14

I'm English and I'd automatically say it MattAYus. I'm not sure why, but I must have heard it pronounced that way over here.

GlintingFuriously · 16/05/2023 20:20

I live in a German-speaking country, Matthias is indeed a popular name here and is pronounced Matt-ee-as

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 16/05/2023 20:27

In Sweden it was very popular in the 80's and it's pronounced Matt-EE-us.

PickledScrump · 16/05/2023 20:29

I know one with Swedish heritage said as Matt-EE-as but he’s young adult now and just goes by Matti.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 16/05/2023 20:30

I also have only heard the Matt-eye-uss pronounciation. I think this is the pronounciation in Scandinavia. Nice name though

ourflagmeansdeath · 16/05/2023 21:31

I'm from England and would say Matt-eye-us. I think it's a lovely name either way though, really nice alternative to Matthew

NotABeliever · 16/05/2023 22:40

It's a heat name. Classic but not common. My favourite type of name. Bit like Constance for a girl.

NotABeliever · 16/05/2023 22:41

Autocorrect!! Not "heat", "great"!

DuchessOfSausage · 17/05/2023 10:23

I know two - Mat-ee-as and Math-eye-us

SVRT19674 · 17/05/2023 11:16

I would pronounce it Matt-ee-ass, but then I am in Spain and probably projecting. There is one such one in my daughter´s class.

DuchessOfSausage · 17/05/2023 12:32

I think in most of Europe, it is said as Matt-ee-as.
Matteo and Mateo are also popular.

Mathias looks wrong to me.
