I love August and Autumn, they're both such gorgeous names.

@Mangotango39 The app isn't letting me quote your comment about pronouncing Aubrey.
Aubrey is pronounced "aw-bray" or "aw-bree".
Definitely not "or" as there's no R in the Au bit so not sure why you'd fling one in.
Presuming you wouldn't add an R into Autumn and August as well? It's the same opening sound and again there's no R.
You have truly beautiful taste in names but if you can only pronounce the aw sound as "or" then probably best to avoid and go for Willow, Summer, Tuesday, Meadow, River, Clover etc. Nature inspired names are my favourites too 🥰

My little girl is called Autumn! We get so many compliments about her name. Other names that were on my list:
River
Rowan
Willow
Ada
Iris
Also love Aubrey!

@pickd
or / aw are homophone digraphs, they sound the same?!

pickd · 18/05/2023 14:26

@RosaSkye if you have a really English accent then maybe but not for everyone else.
Those of us in Scotland find the homophone stuff ridiculous 'cos no they are definitely not the same sound and aren't really for anyone outwith certain areas of England lol (possibly some Irish accents but again not all). There is no R is aw and to add one in because a few accents can't pronounce an aw sound without it seems ridiculous 😄

pickd · 18/05/2023 14:27

*no R in aw.
App doesn't let me correct the autocorrect errors sorry.

RosaSkye · 18/05/2023 14:30

@pickd they are linguistically homophones- au/aw/or…. Autumn, Awesome, Orville all start with the same sound. I honestly don’t know how you’d pronounce Au in Autumn as anything other than or!

Lovely name anyhow!

Agree, beautiful name. I can't think how else to describe it to you 😂
I'd put it's "aw" not "or" but evidently you'll read them as the same. Really not trying to be awkward here, I know it possibly reads that way but it's not the intention.
Umm.... make the aw sound and end it before you chuck on the unnecessary R? That's the only way I can think of showing you what I mean since I cant just send a voice note on MN 😄
So, aw STOP! Not aw R. No idea how else to show you lol, call up a Scottish friend and ask them to pronounce aw and or, and if you don't have a Scottish friend then it's time to find some 😉

@pickd I am fascinated and currently googling!

😄 this made me smile! You've got me sitting here going "aw or aw or" in umpteen different accents now haha

I love Autumn! Violet, Hazel, and Ivy were also high on my list.

It sounds like you like seasonal/month/day names though… I once met a little Tuesday and thought that was a great name. Or Winter, nicknamed Winnie?

I think of Bertie Wooster’s Aunt Augusta. Battleaxe name unfortunately.
