How do you pronounce it?

I love the way it looks, but wondering if people would pronounce it the same way I would.

to rhyme with Caroline? more Avaline?

MrsSamR · 10/05/2023 16:09

Like Adaline but with a 'v' so ah-vuh-line?

CeeCeeDeeBee · 10/05/2023 16:10

Av-uh-leen or Av-leen, depending on which part of France you're from.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 10/05/2023 16:10

I really like it but I can't unhear that bloody awful woman from Bread shouting it. Not as that would be a worry for you or your DD as the show is years old, it's just put me off the name.

NBLarsen · 10/05/2023 16:12

"Av" to rhyme with "have"

"a" as a lower case "a" rather than upper case "ay"

"line" as per "Caroline"

It's a nice name, sounds pretty.
Anyone as old as me will know it as the daughter of the Boswell family in the sitcom Bread. I've never heard the name anywhere else so it can't be very common. I really like it though!

BarryShitpea · 10/05/2023 16:24

Like Avaline Boswell 😂

KirstenBlest · 10/05/2023 16:48

'R Aveline. To go with 'R Joey, 'R Jack, 'R Adrian and 'R Billy,

Coronationstation · 10/05/2023 16:49

BarryShitpea · 10/05/2023 16:24

Like Avaline Boswell 😂

oh gawd, i knew the pronunciation came from somewhere, i just couldn't place it!! 😂

KirstenBlest · 10/05/2023 16:49

Avel like in unravel, line as in washing line

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 10/05/2023 16:50

I’d pronounce it to rhyme with Abilene from The Help. AY-vuh-leen.

RosaSkye · 10/05/2023 18:09

Av- uh - line

but I can imagine also Av-uh-leen which I think I maybe prefer.

it’s a lovely meaning, I think it’s hazelnut tree?

salamithumbs · 10/05/2023 18:30

To rhyme with Caroline since that's how they said it in Bread, but if I'd never seen that I'd probably wonder if it was Ah-vuh-lyn or Ah-vuh-leen! I really like it as a name 😍

Skybluepinky · 10/05/2023 21:03

Are u Scouse?
She was in Bread and a slapper

Loria · 10/05/2023 21:05

🤣

Kokopenny · 10/05/2023 21:06

Our Avaline!!!!

Simianwalk · 10/05/2023 21:07

But no one under the age of 45 will remember that!

waterlego · 10/05/2023 21:11

Ah! I couldn’t work out why I recognised it but yes, Bread!

I would say

A as in ‘hat’
Second a same as first syllable in ‘about’
And line as in washing line!

Haven’t seen/heard them before but I like those French pronunciations upthread.

I also like Adeline (and again the sounds could be manipulated according to preference!)

Spanielsarepainless · 10/05/2023 21:17

Prefer Adeline. Adderline.

salamithumbs · 10/05/2023 21:21

Simianwalk · 10/05/2023 21:07

I hate to say it but I'm 29 and I remember it, they must have shown reruns 😂

PickledScrump · 10/05/2023 21:36

Av-ah-line

like sounds like “have a line” 😬

I must be the only person who hasn’t heard of this bread thing 😂

DrFoxtrot · 10/05/2023 22:06

Yes, pronounced like the character in Bread Grin, 'Gotta get up, gotta get out...'

FranKatzenjammer · 10/05/2023 22:23

'I'm a model, aren' I?'.

VivaVivaa · 10/05/2023 22:29

I’m wondering how it’s Ah-va-line with the E in it as opposed to an A? I must be in the minority but id wonder if it’s supposed to be Ave (to rhyme with rave, pave or Maeve)-line or Ave-Lyn?

friendlycat · 10/05/2023 22:32

It’s my middle name!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/05/2023 22:38

"Got to get up, got to get up
Grab the world by the throat and shout" 🎵
