Baby names

Lucy or Rose?

Hi,
So we had settled on the name Lucy as my DH didn't like Rose which was one of the names which and had been on the top of my list for years. I had felt Rose was quite popular but now everywhere I go I am hearing the name Lucy and starting to have doubts. We've already registered her but feel there's still time to change it as she's only 8 weeks. What are your thoughts on the names? Do you think changing it at this point would be better?

I would stick with it. I like both names and like you prefer Rose. You will get used to it though. If you re-register, Lucy will still be mentioned on the certificate.

Beamur · 10/05/2023 10:09

Lucy is a lovely name.

Mayhemmumma · 10/05/2023 10:10

I prefer Rose too, if you're desperate to change it, I'd say go for it while she's tiny.

Mayhemmumma · 10/05/2023 10:10

Only if DH agrees mind!

quietnightmare · 10/05/2023 10:15

Shout out the name Lucy all day long and then tomorrow shout the name rose all day long. See which one annoys you the least because let's face it you will say it 1000000000000 times a day for probably atleast the next 18 years. I said my child name yesterday about 40 billion times 😂

Then make your decision she is young enough for it to be changed

Stick with Lucy, far too many baby Rose about at the min, and it gives old lady talc vibes.

That's how my husband sees the name Rose too but he really doesn't mind changing it if I want to! I think they are both lovely names but just getting annoyed hearing other children named Lucy everywhere we go at the moment, kinda ruining the name for me

There are a lot of Lucy's. Two in my daughter's class, my niece and a friend's baby. I agree it is a lovely name, I don't mind popular names though.

fairycupcakes · 10/05/2023 11:48

I’d say change it if you’re having second thoughts and DH is onboard. Personally I think Rose is much nicer than Lucy or what about Lucia? (Loo see ah) again far nicer than Lucy.

Congratulations by the way ❤️ Just do whatever feels right x

PickledScrump · 10/05/2023 12:43

I named my daughter something I had never heard before, and most people also had never heard before. Since then I’ve heard her name used several times. I still love her name and it absolutely suits her. I think it’s just one of those things that you notice more once you’ve chosen the name. Lucy isn’t very common in children. I’d say most are 30+ so I don’t think there will be loads in a class. If you like the name keep it.

ourflagmeansdeath · 10/05/2023 20:20

I absolutely love both, they're both gorgeous names. Honestly in my opinion, they're both as popular as each other. But it really depends how you feel, either way you can't really go wrong.

MamaDollyorJesus · 10/05/2023 21:29

I'm not sure you can really rely on the most popular names list for whether or not there'll be 5 in the class - DD1 has a name that was the number one name for the year she was born then the following 10 years but at almost 24 she's the only one I've ever come across.

DD2 is Lucy so I'm biased but I prefer it to Rose every other child I know is Rose or has Rose as a middle name. But again in over 20 years of having my Lucy I've only ever come across one other & she's 2 (her middle name is Rose).

Sunshineclouds11 · 10/05/2023 21:31

Rose is very popular in my area atm!

I like Lucy, shout 'Lucy your teas ready, Lucy bathtime' etc and see how you feel 😂

KirstenBlest · 10/05/2023 22:06

Rosie is far more popular than Lucy, and Rose seems to be every other girl's middle name, and has been for about 20 years.
Lucy is more of a classic, so you may have heard it on older girls.

I prefer Lucy, by far, but she's your baby.

SkaneTos · 10/05/2023 22:13

Lucy is a lovely name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/05/2023 22:31

I think Rose is much more popular than Lucy? (Check darkgreener)

I like Rose much better (despite the overuse) but if you like Lucy I wouldn’t change Lucy on popularity grounds

Crikeyalmighty · 10/05/2023 22:33

Both lovely

SheilaFentiman · 10/05/2023 22:38

Rosie is 11th, Rose 68th, Lucy not in the top 100 on this list.

I suspect you are hearing it more because your ear is tuned into it, and missing all the Ellas and Millies!

SheilaFentiman · 10/05/2023 22:39

Personally, I prefer Lucy - and Lucy Rose Surname flows nicely - but both are nice names

ChairLegsAndPants · 10/05/2023 22:45

My second baby is Lucy (2022 baby) and haven't met any other baby Lucy's yet and one Lucy in my older daughters class. I have had my wobbles with the name but then I had the same wobbles with my oldest too! Roses are my favourite flower but I find the word 'Rose' a little blah. The meaning wonderful but the actual sound not so much. I always think 'they rose as he entered the room' kind of vibes with Rose. Plus the older lady thing as mentioned above.

Beaverbridge · 10/05/2023 22:47

Lucy is a beautiful name.

VerityUnreasonble · 10/05/2023 22:55

You are hearing it because you're listening for it.

If you'd called her Rose you'd hear that everywhere!

Sandy742 · 10/05/2023 22:58

So strange, I literally could have written this exact post. My baby is 7 weeks old and we have also registered her as Lucy but I am now having doubts! I’ve got so used to calling her “baby” now that I don’t even know what name I want to change it to. My husband and I have very different tastes and it feels like we both settled with Lucy rather than loving the name. I don’t like the idea of changing it and still having her old name on the birth certificate, though I guess it’s better than a name we don’t love!

billthefrog · 10/05/2023 22:58

Lucy is lovely. Rose is more popular/faddy definitely, stick with Lucy.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 10/05/2023 23:15

I much prefer Lucy. Rose is old laddish to me also.
