I absolutely loved following the post with popular names in lower ages I.e repetitions seen alot in a class or age group etc.
I propose the opposite question as I'm looking for ANY names that might not be repeated in a class/year group.

What names are in your child's class that are not commonly repeated?

I know a small Peter and a small Sharon.

I generally agree with you about the current parents' generation thing, though... No small Waynes or Darrens yet!

CatOnTheChair · 06/05/2023 09:54

Totally unpredictable, and very geographically dependant.
DS1 went from being one of 3 in his class to the only one in a year of 90 kids.
DS2 is usually the only one of his peer group, but if you go to the preschool end of the playground, there are loads.

BodyKeepingScore · 06/05/2023 09:56

There was a child called Nigel in my DS nursery class. I know all Nigels were children in their lifetime, but it still struck me as odd and awkward for some reason.

2reefsin30knots · 06/05/2023 09:58

Pretty sure we have no Claires, Jennys or Tanyas. We do have a Darren and a Nigel.

Riverlee · 06/05/2023 10:01

Nigel and Sharon, two names I didn’t think we’d see for a long, long time.

Came across a Kenny recently.

DorothyBaker · 06/05/2023 10:06

We have a Susie in our year 3 but she’s the only small Susan I know

Tamara, Caroline

Names like John and Mary, also names like Lesley are more of a grandparents generation but seem to not have recovered from over saturation two generations ago

I don’t know any little Pauls either.
Think of your grandparents basically and their names (apart from Jon, William, George, James) or Anna/Hannah/Ann or Elizabeth and their names are unlikely to be spotted in primary schools

DorothyBaker · 06/05/2023 10:08

Oh and there’s a Barry in DD’s year 7 which shocked me 😂(mum is American though)

DorothyBaker · 06/05/2023 10:10

Roger 🤢
Brian

Some names just better never come back 🤓

Anaemiafog · 06/05/2023 10:10

I know a toddler Brian. There can't be many of them. The names I think of as very 70s haven't seen a revival...yet, think Donna, Tracey, Dawn, Wendy, etc.

Geneticsbunny · 06/05/2023 10:19

Alan, Linda, Boris, Kathy, Louise, Bernard, Susan, Karen, Bobby, Brian, Thomas, Derek, Martin, Julie, Robert, Sarah, Peter, David, James.

Hoppinggreen · 06/05/2023 10:22

I met a baby Douglas recently, not heard that one before

salamithumbs · 06/05/2023 10:36

There's only two repeated names across my daughter's year group (Maeve and Luke) though none of the names strike me as unusual really (bar one or two!) But I agree I'd be surprised to meet a young child called 60s/70s/80s throwback names like Karen, Sharon, Tracey, Helen etc. I was taken aback to meet a young Patricia recently!

salamithumbs · 06/05/2023 10:43

Sorry, didn't want to type out the whole year as it would obviously be outing (and take all morning) 😂but some off the top of my head are April, Dorothy, Caroline, Michaela, Vinny, Claudia, David, Cian, Naomi, Anthony

nobodygoesdowninthejungle · 06/05/2023 10:48

When DD started secondary school last year I was surprised to see a Joanna and a Jennifer on her class list. They're the only ones I know under 40. DD literally didn't know the name Joanna - some of my friends are called that but all known as "Jo" - so it seemed quite unusual to her. I laughed as there was an Amelia in my class at secondary school which I had never come across before. DD knows dozens of Amelia/Emilias and variations on that name

PickledScrump · 06/05/2023 11:46

It’s definitely area dependent. I don’t know of any Olivia’s throughout my daughters school and yet it’s been number one for years.

Maisie

Kirstie

Plenty of Maisie's round our end

Alan, Linda, Boris, Kathy, Louise, Bernard, Susan, Karen, Bobby, Brian, Thomas, Derek, Martin, Julie, Robert, Sarah, Peter, David, James.

Scores of James in every generation everywhere I lived, and I know a few little Thomases and a couple of Sarahs

@Hoppinggreen Was he Scottish?

DorothyBaker · 06/05/2023 14:45

Terry for men and women (as short for Theresa)
Mel for a boy
Donald
Rupert (though I think I've heard of it creeping back)
Natasha
Adam
Jean
Victoria
Stacey
Ian (hopefully won't become popular again)
I don't know any little Michaels or Michelles
Stuart?
Lorraine...turns out there's more unpopular than popular ones!

MissDollyMix · 06/05/2023 14:47

Still waiting for a comeback for names from the 1950’s… never met a little Linda, Sandra, Patricia, Colin or Clive - then also names from the 70’s/80’s also unseen- names like Nicola, Claire, Lisa, Jason, Gary.

‘Fashionable’ names here are either Victorian/ early 20th century (can’t move for Elsie’s or Eva’s), very traditional (Emily, Charlotte) or biblical for boys (Elijah, Noah)

DorothyBaker · 06/05/2023 14:39

@Hoppinggreen Was he Scottish?

No, he wasn’t.
No Scottish heritage either
