Carlota or Maxima?

Hello

We are expecting our DD in a few more weeks and have narrowed it down to these two names. My partner is Italian and I'm half English and half Spanish.

We can't decide between these two names so hopefully getting some input from you all would be great. We also have no middle name in case anyone has any suggestions!

I live in Portugal with 3 kids half Brits half Portuguese- I know a Carlota here which is imo much nicer than Maxima which feels more masculine.

massistar · 26/04/2023 15:45

Carlotta has 2 Ts in Italian which I think looks nicer. I don't like Maxima at all I'm afraid. Have never seen it as a name.

HowManySunflowers · 26/04/2023 15:46

Carlotta is lovely (I prefer this spelling).

Oneearringlost · 26/04/2023 15:50

Maxima sounds like a sanitary pad.

Carlotta

TennisWithDeborah · 26/04/2023 15:51

There was a Carlotta in one of Enid Blyton’s St Clare’s books. I have adored it ever since! It looks odd to me with the one T.

Unlike the PPs I am a fan of Maxima too. It sounds strong and stylish.

lotusspread · 26/04/2023 15:51

@Oneearringlost Carlota because I am Spanish thank you very much.

Definitely prefer Carlotta or Carlota.

ChampagneCommunist · 26/04/2023 15:53

I like Maxima. Mainly because I am a fan of the Dutch Queen

AMuser · 26/04/2023 15:53

Carlota definitely. It’s a beautiful band.

Maxima does sound like a sanitary pad. Or a female gladiator.

AMuser · 26/04/2023 15:53

*name!

AMuser · 26/04/2023 15:55

Carlota Rose. (Nod to the English heritage)
Carlota Joy

in terms of middle name.

VeryQuaintIrene · 26/04/2023 15:56

Carlota is lovely. Maxima is an impressive name but if she ends up studying Latin, she might be laughed at for being called Huge...

shoopshoopdedoo · 26/04/2023 16:05

Carlota!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 26/04/2023 16:07

I like Carlota/Carlotta. It's sharp and snappy. In a good way.

I quite like Maxima too though. Is there a Euro royal somewhere called Maxima?

Ah, that's who I was thinking of!

Sandysandwich · 26/04/2023 16:19

Carlota is lovely, really nice name that works well in multiple cultures

Personally I don't like Maxima as much- it just sounds quite harsh and like maxi-pads, and quite hard to carry off if she ends up at any size extremes

ourflagmeansdeath · 26/04/2023 17:29

Carlota

DuchessOfSausage · 26/04/2023 18:36

My partner is Italian and I'm half English and half Spanish.
If you are in the UK, people will say Carlota as Carl-O-ta not Carl-otta.

Maxima is easier but is the plural of maximum.

salamithumbs · 26/04/2023 19:41

Much prefer Carlota! First thought was Carlotta from Twins at St Clare's too, and sounds fresh and elegant. Maxima sounds a bit 'lumos maxima' and 'circus maximus' and as others have said, reminds me of a maxi sanitary pad.

pinkdelight · 26/04/2023 19:43

Maxima sounds like a sanitary pad size, sorry. Carlotta with two t's is nice.

Statsinyoureyes · 26/04/2023 19:44

@DuchessOfSausage I don't think they will pronounce it like that, I think the Spanish spelling is lovely

DuchessOfSausage · 26/04/2023 19:55

@Statsinyoureyes , just because you think they won't doesn't mean it won't happen. If you think of words like rota, quota, iota or anecdota, they don't have an otta sound.

PickledScrump · 26/04/2023 20:15

@DuchessOfSausage I’m UK and ive never heard Carlotta /Carlota said any other way than Carl-otta. I can’t imagine anyone saying it as Carl-O-ta. It’s hardly an unheard of name.

Watchthedoormat · 26/04/2023 20:20

Love Carlota
Agree with a pp that Maxima sounds like a super sanitary pad.
