on the names I like, but we won't use because my husband doesn't. Just curious what you think of them:

Alyssia
Maia
Luana
Mary
Mary Lee or Mary-Lee
Emma
Bella*
Chloe
Shirley
Beverly

he does like Isabella "Bella", though. Just not by itself.

Use Isabella and then just call her Bella...

suzettenoisette · 24/04/2023 09:31

Yes, we are considering it.

This wasn't so much about wanting a compromise, I am just curious what people think of my own favourites so I'd like comments on them ;)

You'd certainly be ahead of the curve with Shirley and Beverly.
Out of the others, Mary is the nicest. It's a classic name and not currently used much.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 24/04/2023 09:35

Shirley and Beverley are a bit old fashioned IMO and not in a good way

Luana I really don’t like as makes me think of a girl I knew at school called Luan who was an absolute cow.

MouthfulofMidwinter · 24/04/2023 09:38

The only one I like is Mary. The others seem a weird mixed bag of recently-overused and now dated (Chloe, Emma), plain dated and have not yet 'returned' (Beverley, Shirley), and sort of frilly (Bella, Alyssia, Mary-Lee) with Luana a bit of an outlier (the one I know is Brazilian). Actually, I don't mind Maia, but there are a lot of Mias about these days.

I knew an Alyssia in my 20s -- she loathed her name, which she thought was a wispy, girly sort of name, while she was a big, stocky, forthright, loud woman, who played hockey at national level.

MaydinEssex · 24/04/2023 09:42

I like Alyssia and Bella, although I do like Isabella more.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/04/2023 10:03

Not surprised your husband doesn’t want to use them. Alyssia is really nice and Emma and Bella are alright but the others are what I would associate with older people.

i also agree that if you want Bella, then something longer is better in the birth certificate.

user1492757084 · 24/04/2023 10:05

Not many of your names are in my favourite top 50.
Everyone has their own likes.

Chloe, Emma, Luana and Mary I like better than
Alyssa, Maia, Mary Lee, Bella and Shirley which I find too girly.
I would use the first four depending on how they sound with the surname etc..
Beverly is lovely though it is a little old fashioned.
My favourite names, inspired from your list ..

Mary Isabella
Luella Chloe

WhisperingAutistic · 24/04/2023 10:08

Alyssia - It has a nice sound. I'd worry about everyone spelling it wrong though
Maia - How is this pronounced? May ya?
Luana - I'm not too keen. I prefer Louisa
Mary - Lovely name
Mary Lee or Mary-Lee - I don't like the Lee part at all
Emma - A classic
Bella* - Nice
Chloe - Nice but overused
Shirley - Cute!
Beverly - Also nice but I don't like Bev

ComeTheFuckOnBridgett · 24/04/2023 10:09

I don't blame your husband. Bella is probably the best but I'd start thinking of others.

kezziecakes · 24/04/2023 10:12

I think I might have similar taste to your dh as I don't really like your list. I quite like Mary but not the others. I also like Isabella but not Bella on its own.

fairycupcakes · 24/04/2023 10:17

I feel like you’re American from some of your name choices, correct me if I’m wrong but obviously could be totally different popular names in US than there are in the UK.

Alyssia - I quite like this if it’s pronounced a liss ee a and not aleesha.

Maia - Maya or Mya? Kind of blends in with all the other vowel heavy names at the moment.

Luana - This made me think you’re American. Not a bad thing of course but I’ve never heard this name used in the UK. Not keen on it.

Mary - I want to say it’s a classic as it’s a biblical name but it just feels dated to my ears.

Mary Lee or Mary-Lee - Absolutely not. Even worse with a hyphen.

Emma - Best name you’ve got on this list. Pretty classic. I also like Emily.

Bella* Pretty but it’s a nn. Isabel/Isabella is nice but so very popular.

Chloe - like Emma I see this as a pretty classic.

Shirley & Beverly - I’m not sure how these made you’re list as they are really very different to the rest of the names. I don’t think they are yet due a comeback. They are very old lady names imo and I can just imagine two elderly sisters with these names.

Pamandherpampams · 24/04/2023 10:19

Isabella is fine.

I like Shirley too but you need something you can both get on board with.

BeatricePortinari · 24/04/2023 10:29

Alyssia - too many possible variations

Maia - confusing with all the Maya's Mia's

Luana - another confusing variation name e.g. Luna, Lyra, Lyla etc etc etc

Mary - Beautiful. Simple. Classic.

Mary Lee or Mary-Lee - No. Spoils the classic simplistically of Mary.

Emma - Beautiful. Classic.

Bella* - ok but princessy.

Chloe - bit 1990s

Shirley - retro cool needs confidence.

Beverly - No. 50 year old aunt not ready for a comeback.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 24/04/2023 10:33

Isabella with Bella as a day to day name is lovely.

Some of the others have contractions that are just plain ugly. Shirl and Bev have to up there with my least favourite 'names to be shouted across a busy supermarket when you're stuck with the cauliflowers and they are mucking about with the bean stack'.

Think about the contractions.

SeamsLegit · 24/04/2023 12:51

I much prefer less commonly used names, verging on to 'special' names but not ridiculous... And absolutely no messing with spelling. In truth, I don't like ANY name on your list. If I were to have another girl (which I 100% will NOT be) I would be thinking along the names of Penelope (Penny is adorable), Bluebell, Primrose, Beatrix, Vivienne. I love to hear other people's opinions on names, it's a topic I've been interested in all my life!

TooOldForThisNonsense · 24/04/2023 09:35

Shirley and Beverley are a bit old fashioned IMO and not in a good way

Luana I really don’t like as makes me think of a girl I knew at school called Luan who was an absolute cow.

This. I’d start by ruling out Shirley, Beverly and perhaps Mary

suzettenoisette · 24/04/2023 12:59

Thanks so far.

I am not American. I heard the name Luana as a teenager and fell in love with it. I think it is Portuguese and Italian.

Beverly I thought could make a comeback with it being close to Everly. But I guess it's not ready yet.

Primrose is cute and I also like Penelope "Penny". Will suggest them to my husband. Vivienne is cute too.

Alyssia - seems a bit fussy
Maia - meh
Luana - no
Mary - lovely
Mary Lee or Mary-Lee - ding dong Mary Lee on high
Emma - lovely
Bella* - ok but feels like it's short for somthing
Chloe - overused about 20 years ago
Shirley - would be a 70 yr old's name
Beverly - racecourse

ourflagmeansdeath · 24/04/2023 17:28

Alyssia - I like Alyssa but not Alyssia
Maia - I like Maya but not this spelling
Luana - Makes me think of Loud House
Mary - I love Mary, it's beautiful
Mary Lee or Mary-Lee - No not a fan of double names, especially with things like Lee and May etc.
Emma - Beautiful, so gorgeous
Bella* - It's really lovely, I prefer Isabella for full though
Chloe - Not for me
Shirley - Absolutely not, makes me think of Anne Shirley so a surname to me!
Beverly - Beverly Hills? I like Everly though

Skybluepinky · 24/04/2023 17:38

Alyssia - sounds like u r trying to b different but not in a good way, god help the child if they have a lisp
Maia - lovely but it’s very popular so if that bothers u avoid
Luana - my s has a friend called this, they always call her Mowana
Mary- ok if u are catholic
Mary Lee/Mary-Lee - not unless u want her to be called Ding Dong
Emma - nice classic name
Bella - I know 4 people with dogs called Bella
Chloe- lovely but popular so depends what u r looking for
Shirley- not unless u want her called Big Daddy
Beverley - went out of fashion 50 years ago and probably needs at least another 50 b4 it resurfaces.

Sleepyandconfused · 25/04/2023 12:30

Alyssia - too fussy
Maia - fine, a bit dull
Luana - dislike
Mary - nice
Mary Lee or Mary-Lee - awful
Emma - fine, a bit dull
Bella* - pretty but done to death
Chloe - fine, a bit dull
Shirley - awful
Beverly - awful
