Laurie or Joe?

Which do you prefer for a boy?

We're not keen on Laurence or Joseph, so in both cases the shortened name would be on the BC.

Laurie on its own is more likely to be read as a girls’ name as it is in the US. So I’d choose Joe.

I do really like Laurie for a Lawrence though.

KirstenBlest · 19/04/2023 10:27

Laurie sounds like Lorry.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/04/2023 10:27

Laurie is beautiful

ColdAsAWitchsTit · 19/04/2023 10:28

Laurie is a fantastic name. Joe is meh.

WhatHoMarjorie · 19/04/2023 10:32

Laurie is so drippy.

I prefer Joe.

sunriseoversea · 19/04/2023 10:36

Thanks for your replies! Pretty divided!

I really like Laurie (and, yes, it has Little Women connotations for me), but DH thinks it's too much like 'Lorry'. I don't actually mind that, though! I think it's a nice gentle name for a boy.

He likes Joe, and I like it also, but I'm worried it is a bit 'meh'.

We also quite like Jesse, but I just think of American teenagers whenever I hear it.

Kit is also an option, but I worry about the 'T' being dropped and him just ended up at 'Ki' 😂

Anyway - we're struggling!

Joe is fine. Solid and strong. I know a Ben who’s just Ben so I suppose just Joe is no different.

Sounds like you like short names. How about Jed?

HappyMe6 · 19/04/2023 10:40

Don’t like Laurie sounds like a lorry. Joe is much nicer. I just love Jesse and kit. I’m not much help am i but Jesse and kit both big winners for me

GoodVibesHere · 19/04/2023 18:44

Oh I like Kit, as a nickname for Christopher. I can't imagine anyone would say 'Ki' as it just doesn't sound right and almost isn't easy to say.

Whatever you choose in the end I do think it's worth having a longer version name on the birth certificate as it gives the child choices.

HuggingtheHRT · 19/04/2023 18:47

I love Laurie - (disagree with PP, it absolutely is a proper name) Although I would probably go for Lawrence on the bc - but I think Lawrence is awesome too.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 19/04/2023 19:09

Joe

Carsarelife · 19/04/2023 19:12

Joe is the one I think

KirstenBlest · 19/04/2023 19:35

@ZoyaTheDestroyer , you know the rules, a short name needs to have a longer form to give more options Smile, and Jed would need to be Jedward on the BC.
I know a Jed (Ged) but it's short for Gerald.
Jeb Bush got the Jeb from his initials

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 19/04/2023 19:39

We considered both these names!

I vote Joe, or can I toss in JOEL. It’s the perfect name and no one will tell me otherwise. Plus full name on BC not an issue.

SunnieShine · 19/04/2023 19:53

Joe.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 19/04/2023 21:36

In order:
Laurence.
Joseph.
Christopher.
Joe.
Kit.
Jesse.
Laurie.

Joe and Laurie are both handsome and manly nick names.
Laurence and Joseph are the names I would put on a birth certificate.
I prefer Joe.

Laurie is a traditional, Scottish male name, not a nickname. And it’s fabulous.

Grin I know two Jeds. One is an adult who is just Jed, which is pretty cool, and the other is Josiah Edward. His parents are West Wing fans!

Love a PP’s suggestion of Joel.

Nottamug · 21/04/2023 18:20

Laurie/ Laurence .Absolutely wins hands down .

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 21/04/2023 19:09

I love both.

One is my name and one is my Dad's :)

And I can assure you that they are both real names (weird thing to say!)

Daisybuttercup12345 · 25/04/2023 23:49

Joe.
