Baby name and dog name sound alike

LolaBearthePolarBear · 14/04/2023 14:27

So i've seen a thread similar to this one so it is abit ridiculous but i need help.

I'm expecting my first baby in Oct with my partner however he already has 3 children so we have 4 between us. All the kids names begin with L and partner adamant babies name must begin L too, we also have a dog named Lola.

Now been as weve alreday taken 4 of the nicest L names, there aren't many nice ones left i like however i really like the name Liyla..

Problem is it sounds very like Lola and i think the dog is going to be confused anytime we call the baby which makes me a bit sad. I do have pet names i call the dog which we can use but she will still always come to her name Lola..

How much of a problem do you think this would be.. anyone got any experience with rhyming names!

Lilah is pretty.
I cringe whenever I hear a family with matching letter names.

CallieQ · 15/04/2023 01:02

It's daft to have all kid's and dog's names beginning with L

CallieQ · 15/04/2023 01:03

Labia?

Wish people would back off with their comments about the husband and his children with two other women.

The OP is asking about names. She’s not asking for relationship advice so leave off with the shitty comments. Christ.

It’s a grand total of three people. You can just address them directly.

The controlling partner is relevant though, it's him being a twat about an L name.

2chocolateoranges · 15/04/2023 10:41

I have a friend with a Lyla but I do feel it’s pretty similar to Lola.

I certainly wouldn’t be “forced” into sticking with the L if there are other names you prefer.

I knew a family when we were teens who had all the boys beginning with A and all the girls K. There were 4 boys and 3 girls and they were forever opening each other mail as they couldn’t distinguish who the letter was for until it was opened.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 15/04/2023 10:41

How about Lyra? It doesn’t have the double L sound of Lola/Lilah but it has the “ie” sound that may appeal and it’s also pretty.

I personally think as pretty as it is, Lilah and Lola are very similar, too similar if it were me choosing. At the risk of sounding really daft, have you tried saying or shouting Lilah in the dog’s presence and seeing if she reacts?!

It’s relevant that it is he who has imposed the daft ‘L’ rule as if his (soon to be) five children are a set of action figures.

She will. It will really confuse the dog to live with a Lilah. Dogs don’t process sound like humans which is why the best dog names are short with hard syllables. Lola is a pretty perfect example.

Lilah and Lola would be too similar for siblings, too.

Why must the baby's name begin with L? Because your partner says so? He sounds like a bully.

If you're not married it's not his decision, only you can register the baby. Call her what you want.

What’s his name ? Louis? Larry? Lenny?

This is a bizarre situation, frankly. It would be weird if it was a joint decision, but if your ‘ partner’ ( aka overlord) is imposing it, it is very unsettling. Why should you call your baby a name that has anything to do with his other children? Let alone the dog…..

Is he going to make them all dress in the same colour as well? And maybe get a matching dog collar?

I think you need to address this now.

AgnesGray · 15/04/2023 11:23

There are so many Lilahs, Lyras, Lolas, Lilys, Elaras, Eliaras. Just so many!

I would go with something a bit less samey.

And yes Lola and Lilah are too similar. Although I did know a household with a child named the same as the dog...and the dog was there first 😂

FayCarew · 15/04/2023 12:37

@LudicrouslyCapaciousBag , he has 3 children already and OP's baby will be his 4th.

@AgnesGray , Lily, Luna, Lila, Lyla, Lyra, Layla, Lola, Lucy, Lara, Leah, Lia, ...
and all the Ellas and Ellies, and El- names and Delilahs
and Leo, Lucas, Luca, Louis and Louie for boys

so samey

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 15/04/2023 12:53

You’re quite right,@FayCarew. Apologies OP!

ThomasinaLivesHere · 15/04/2023 13:10

I quite like Lilah.

Although doesn’t it bother you that it’s something he’s wanted for all his kids regardless of partner - I just find that a bit weird and would make me question how he views his relationship to me.

Enko · 15/04/2023 13:17

Lilah. And Lola is close yes but how old is the dog? How long will it be a issue? My grandfather called his dog after his 2nd dd as he missed her whist she was sailing so they had 2 Rita's.

Lilah is pretty

GBoucher · 15/04/2023 13:37

Your dog will definitely be confused. Dogs don't process words as well as humans do. If your dog is Henry, you could call him Herring, Hayward, Hailey, etc. and he will likely assume he is being called. Lilah and Lola are way too similar. As another poster says, call out Lilah and see if your dog responds. Then you have your answer.

LolaBearthePolarBear · 15/04/2023 14:24

So dog is only 2 and ye she looked up when I called Lilah, she pretty much comes whenever I use a certain tone of voice though which is probably the same tone of voice I’d be using for a baby, so either way I’m gonna have problems I think lol. But I said Lilah quietly and she still looked so ye think it’s out.

yes I know the L thing is abit weird but he’s just always liked L names so it’s what he likes, he’s not forcing, it if I don’t find one I like it won’t be happening but I did say I would try to. We already have a Lilly, Lucas and Leo plus Lola the dog.. which doesn’t leave much else. Lyra is nice but same issue!

It's all part of the same thing. It's fucking weird and controlling to have 4 children across three women and insist they all start with the same initial because you want them to.

Not a chance, would be answer. OP's kid is not just yet another one in his set.

Exactly this. He had three previous times to choose an L name with his former partner(s). Why should you be forced into a tradition that they started??! This is your first child, and you should choose the name you like.

caringcarer · 15/04/2023 16:49

Liliana. You could call her Lil.
One of my dogs is called Liliana.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 15/04/2023 16:53

Are you likely to want more children after this one? If so I definitely wouldn’t go down the route of using a name beginning with L, if you’re struggling with this baby to find a name you want imagine how much harder it will be with a second or third etc. As a compromise I would agree on an L middle name.

HernamewasNOLA · 15/04/2023 17:01
