Baby name and dog name sound alike

LolaBearthePolarBear · 14/04/2023 14:27

So i've seen a thread similar to this one so it is abit ridiculous but i need help.

I'm expecting my first baby in Oct with my partner however he already has 3 children so we have 4 between us. All the kids names begin with L and partner adamant babies name must begin L too, we also have a dog named Lola.

Now been as weve alreday taken 4 of the nicest L names, there aren't many nice ones left i like however i really like the name Liyla..

Problem is it sounds very like Lola and i think the dog is going to be confused anytime we call the baby which makes me a bit sad. I do have pet names i call the dog which we can use but she will still always come to her name Lola..

How much of a problem do you think this would be.. anyone got any experience with rhyming names!

I don't think there's too many lylas about. I have one and we never meet others

Magnoliasky · 14/04/2023 21:14

Lilah Lila is lovely! Different enough to Lola

Axahooxa · 14/04/2023 21:15

It’s a beautiful name. Don’t worry about it being similar to your dog’s name.

I can see your DP’s point- it will separate them quite obviously if your baby is the only one without the L name. Your child might like that shared name link with their siblings, even if it’s annoying choosing the name!

Lilah is a gorgeous name. If you like it- go for it.

BreviloquentBastard · 14/04/2023 21:19

One of my dogs is a rescue and we literally have the same name, I didn't want to change it because she already knew it. I don't care, she doesn't either, it's kind of funny. Call your child whatever you want!

liveforsummer · 14/04/2023 21:20

Lilah is nice, and I doubt the dog will mind - dogs are usually spoken to in a slightly different tone of voice which makes all the difference to them. Please only choose thins though if you truly love it and not being dictated to. Why the obsession with L?

liveforsummer · 14/04/2023 21:23

I think Lila and Lola is perhaps too much, plus sooo many Lilas around!

Too much of Lola was a child I agree but she's a dog. I've never met a Lila ever - ive loves all over the Uk and abroad and work in a school now for many years so come across a lot of names. How many do you know?

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 14/04/2023 21:24

I like Lilah and don't think it's that close to Lola. (However, I'd be more concerned about a bloke racking up multiple kids with multiple women and branding them all with his naming strategy. His name doesn't begin with L as well does it??)

Ok so the spelling is just me being dyslexic.. it’s Lilah as in Delilah without the De. I was spelling it like Layla with an I in my head, sorry

Anyway.. the L thing is a contentious issue but I agreed to try and find a name I liked before I ruled it out. And it’s not just from one of his previous partners it’s from 2 so it’s something he’s wanted for all his kids regardless of partner. And part of me thinks if my baby is the only one without an L name now, will they feel left out?

Lilah so far is the only one I like yes, Lilah or Layla but both come with the same dog issue! Getting the feeling the L name might just have to be scrapped..

Perhaps they’ll feel like an actual person rather than a low-grade kardashian knock off whose parents were more interested in a theme than naming an actual person.

I mean for goodness sake the poor child will know that even the dog got a name you preferred over theirs!

I’d be more worried about your child knowing their name was less-preferred than the dog’s but chosen because it fit the ‘theme’

madness

liveforsummer · 14/04/2023 21:49

Who says it's less preferred? Maybe they just didn't think of it. I actually really like Lilah, I'd never come across one and didn't think if it. My dd is called Lola but can't say I like Lilah less tbh. That's like saying I like dd2s name less than I like DD1s because I picked that first.

Spin it the opposite way. Tell them it makes them special.

OP will you give the baby your surname? I'd you're the 3rd woman he's procreated with then he may not hang around.

Make a stand and call her Noelle

I think it's a lovely name and I would definitely use it (if you like it and you do decide to go for an L name - although I would agree with others this seems like a rule that doesn't really need to exist). Please dont worry about it being similar to your dogs name if you really love it. Your daughter will have her name all her life.

MirandaBlu · 14/04/2023 23:54

If you're unsure about using another L but genuinely like Lilah, you could use Delilah as the full name. She can "fit in" with the others as Lilah when she's little but use the full name (or another shortening like Del or Dee) if she dislikes the L-theme when she's older.

I don't know about poor Lola - I think with the two ls in such a short name, even something like Lily or Lulu might trip you up. You just have to try and decide whether the similarity between Lola and Lilah will bother you or not.

If there's another name you prefer to Lilah, though, I'd go for that. My SIL is one of seven siblings (same dad, 2 different mums) all starting with S - she hated it as a child or teen and would've happily stood out as the only non-S! Everyone's different, though.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 14/04/2023 23:55

Your partner needs to back down on the L rule. It is a ridiculous criterion for a life-long decision.

LimitMyScreenTime · 15/04/2023 00:33

What about Lyra?

ladydimitrescu · 15/04/2023 00:46

Lyra

PurpleParrots · 15/04/2023 00:47

My dogs name is Luna. I love her very much but I wouldn’t call my child a name that resembled my dogs name in any way.

Why are you going along with this madness OP?

Call your dc any name of your choice that doesn’t begin with L. It’s your child as well.

ComputerWifeKaren · 15/04/2023 00:51

Lyra is beautiful

JupiterFortified · 15/04/2023 00:52

Wish people would back off with their comments about the husband and his children with two other women.

The OP is asking about names. She’s not asking for relationship advice so leave off with the shitty comments. Christ.
