Effion?

Me and DP are looking at names for DC2. I recently found the boys name Eiffion and instantly fell in love, at first glance I thought the name was ‘eff-ion’ and after a further look thought it was ‘ee-fee-on’ but after a quick search I found out the origin of the name and it’s pronounced ‘avy-on’ or ‘ivy-on’ and i still love it but have fallen in love with ‘eff-ion’ especially with the nickname Effie. Me and DP are not Welsh and DS is named Florian but goes by Ori so we aren’t sure if it will sound right . I don’t want to give him a weird version of a traditional welsh name but at the same time I love eff-ion so much. Would it be weird to name him effion even though it’s not really a name or is there any variants that I’m not aware of.

@SpringIntoChaos would never want to butcher a name, we wouldn’t name him Eiffion/Eifion it would be Effion

@TomatoSandwiches I might add Efan to the list

I don’t personally get why people get so heated over a name sounding slightly feminine. Me and DP like softer sounding ‘male’ names like Florian. Plus Effie would only be a nickname for us to use around the house.

1 - That's exactly what butchering a name consists of.

2 - Try telling your child how little you understand of the issue people have with using girl names or abbreviations that are girl names when he comes home crying about everyone making fun of him.

If you like softer sounding boy names that's perfectly fine. But there's still a difference between softer sounding boy names and out and out girl names.

Suggestions for soft sounding boy names:
Lysander
Louis
Liam
Ronan
Roman
Marius
Elias
Eli
Elijah
Noah
Raphael
Gabriel
Josiah
Jonah
Silas
Linus
Milo
Leo
Ambrose
Phineas
Amos
Amias

It's awful. And Effie for a boy is just unkind.

Radiatorvalves · 09/04/2023 22:30

My great grandmother was Scottish, called Euphemia, known as Effie. She died long before I was born but was apparently an absolute cow. I always thought it was quite funny because I thought Effie sounded rude.

Maybe it’s just me?

WarningToTheCurious · 09/04/2023 22:41

Stefan doesn’t get mistaken for Stephen.

If you’re fond of the double f spelling for names then go for Steffan.

Kitcaterpillar · 09/04/2023 22:49

He will get "effing Effion" all of his life.

Vaguely off-topic, but I never understand these claims about names with a rhyme or a similar sound.

Surely people don't go their whole lives getting called Lazy Daisy or Plain Jane or Boozy Suzie? I'm sure it happens occasionally, but enough to be an actual issue? I suppose if he grows up to be a complete wanker it might happen but then his nickname would be the least of his issues...

PickledScrump · 09/04/2023 23:10

@Zoomer122 ive known several Stefans. None get mixed up with Stephen. I’d think Stefan was more popular these days than Stephen. It’s much better to have a known name than one made up that will get mispronounced all the time.

Zoomer122 · 10/04/2023 08:01

@ReadersD1gest A family friend has this name (who is welsh) and it constantly gets mispronounced as Stephen which I don’t like.

@mathanxiety not what I am doing at all. As far as I know Effion isn’t even a listed name, so I’m not mispronouncing it, it’s just like Ffion with a e in front

OP posts:
MaireadMcSweeney · 10/04/2023 08:27

It sounds like Evian or effluent to my ear. Ffion is a girls name and so is Effie. It's also a made up/bastardised non name. I really think you should let this one go. It's really bad.

Phoebo · 10/04/2023 08:41

Effie could work as a nn for Fiona. Or another F name

rainbowstardrops · 10/04/2023 09:12

I think if you love it and it's not an actual name, Welsh or otherwise, then fine.
I do think it sounds a bit too similar to Florian though and my immediate thought was 'Eff off' Blush
I like a pp suggestion of Ettiene but that doesn't have the 'eff' vibe that you're after.

neveradullmoment99 · 10/04/2023 09:18

She was effing (saying the f word) and blinding!
It reminds me of a swear word.
Sorry, it's awful.

DiscoBeat · 10/04/2023 09:19

At first I read "effing"

Me too! Also it auto corrects to Edison, which would be a bore.

He will get "effing Effion" all of his life.

What about another soft sounding name if you like those?

Fabian
Elliott
Emmett
Lucian

This 💯

StillWantingADog · 10/04/2023 09:20

Welsh here. It’s not a name.
Eifion is, but a very old fashioned one.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 10/04/2023 09:24

I wouldn’t use a made up variant of a Welsh name if you are not Welsh. My first thought when I saw your post title was that it was for a girl (like Ffion). And Effie is plainly a girl’s name, mind you I think Ori is too and you’ve used that.

GlassBunion · 10/04/2023 09:26

It's going to be a name where everyone will either pronounce it incorrectly or ask how to pronounce it.

Given that you've misspelled it yourself from your thread title to your OP , I'd suggest going back to the drawing board.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 10/04/2023 09:29

I also don’t know why you’ve asked opinions, as you haven’t taken any of them on board. Which is of course fine, but why bother asking?

FlounderingFruitcake · 10/04/2023 09:29

It’s beyond awful, sorry. You’ve got a made up variant of a welsh name you can’t pronounce, that in itself looks like a hash up of the girl’s name Ffion and f-off and to really stick the boot in you plan to give him a girl’s name a nickname. Don’t do it!

welshpolarbear · 10/04/2023 09:29

Efan - is awful too especially is you pronounce it eff an. He'd always get Evan and have to correct I'm afraid.

I know you're saying your not butchering a welsh word, your making it up, but you clearly are as you read a welsh word wrong and decided your wrong way was better 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just give the poor kid a normal name, if it's only for the house you can call him Effie anyway.

EspressoPatronum · 10/04/2023 09:33

What about Efren? A Spanish derivative of Ephraim I think?

mrsblueskyeye · 10/04/2023 09:36

AndrexPuppy · 09/04/2023 14:05

I wouldn’t use a name that I didn’t know how to pronounce properly.

This!

Craftyrose · 10/04/2023 09:42

I know an older man called Effion. He pronounces it Ay-vee-on. An f in Welsh is a v sound. He is not that nice so that would put me off!! I quite like it as a name, but there will be lots of pronunciation and spelling questions!

That name is Eifion not effion

CaffiSaliMali · 10/04/2023 09:58

I misread it as Eifion, which as others have said, is a Welsh name. I know one in his 70s and of one in his teens (family name).

People will mistake Effion for Eifion. Effie is a girls name so I don't think he'll thank you for the nickname, even if intended just for use at home, if it's ever accidentally used out and about it may look like you really wanted a girl.

I'd pair Florian with a name like Tristan.

OnaBegonia · 10/04/2023 10:00

a name sounding slightly feminine.
Because it is a female name, it's short for Euphemia, very widely used for girls, quite common name here in Scotland among over 60s women.
