Hi I love the name Dottie/Dot but I want a longer version incase she wants to use later on in life. I'm not overly keen on Dorothy or Dorothea. Can you think of any other names that could use this nickname or could I just use it as a nickname and call her something completely different or would that be odd and confusing for the child?! Thanks!

was going to say its usually a shortening for Dorothy I think Dorothy is a lovely name actually and dottie is so cute I like it too.
I cannot think of another name it can be a shortening of. I also love Doris I love the old traditional names.

Theodora?

DaisyWaldron · 06/04/2023 19:41

You could go the other way around with Theodora.

Dorothy

Or Dora.

Daisy?

Traditionally, Daisy was a pet name for girls called Margaret rather than a full name in its own right.

I don't think a diminutive of a diminutive works.

Also Dolly, works for Ms Parton!

Dorothy

Dorothy or Dolores.

I knew a Dotty once that was a nickname for Hermione. Didn’t make much sense but suited her.

Ridingfree · 06/04/2023 20:13

DD friend is just Dottie Really suits her can't imagine being anything else now

Bobbybobbins · 06/04/2023 20:22

Darcey but might be a stretch? Probably a lot if names beginning with D you could just go for Dot as a nickname?

fairycupcakes · 06/04/2023 20:32

I think anything other than Dorothy or Dorothea is going to be quite the stretch. Though Doris, Dolores, Dolly or Theodora could possibly work.

I think Dorothy is a gorgeous name though, it’s one of the names at the top of my list :)

My best friends sister is Charlotte, her nickname was Dot.

Whatdayisitalexa · 06/04/2023 20:45

Pandora

Tellmethespoiler · 06/04/2023 20:47

Dorota

Widmerpool · 06/04/2023 20:57

Turandot

But I’ve been known my whole life by a nickname that has absolutely no connection with my real name, so I’m sure it doesn’t matter. It’s quite nice having two names to choose from.

shutthewindownow · 06/04/2023 21:07

Matilda ?

Lalux · 06/04/2023 21:11

Dorrit?

Maryandherlamb · 06/04/2023 21:42

I knew a Dot that was Charlotte.... I'm not sure how they came to Dot but it suited her and Charlotte is a lovely name.

FluffMagnet · 06/04/2023 21:48

My grandmother is Dot, short for Doris.

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/04/2023 22:05

Isadora

Doria

My great aunt was called Dot by her siblings because she was the little one (little dot), her name was something completely different. I can she how you’d get there with Charlotte as PP says.
