Our shortlist…Boys Names

Hi all,

We are expecting our baby in the Summer for which we won’t know the sex until he/she arrives. We already have a name sorted if we have a girl, but boys names where the struggle begins. We have narrowed down our list to 3/4 names…

Jacob
Isaac
Rory
Lucas

How would you personally rank these names from best to worst? (Appreciate all personal preference) and do you see any standouts within the list or can advise of any negative connotations associated with any of those selections?

It’s taken us a while to shortlist our choices and now we’re struggling to seperate, so any helpful advice (good or bad) could really help us decide which way to go.

Thanks 🙂

I love Jacob and Lucas equally.

The others two are not my style.

Rory first by a long way. Gorgeous name.

Then Lucas, marginally ahead of Jacob.

Isaac is way down at the bottom. Horrid name. And beware, as evidenced from this thread, it gets misspelled frequently.

Lucas - I know it's popular but I love that name. Also like spelling Lukas but I guess it'd be a life time of spelling it out in the UK.

Isaac - it's less common than the others and I like the sound of it.

Jacob - It's okay, a bit boring but otherwise nice.

Rory - not keen, the double R is a bit of a mouthful.

Thanks for your suggestions, comments, pros and cons all - very much appreciated. To answer a few points raised…

We’re not overly concerned about the meaning behind the name. Nice to know of course but won’t come into the final decision.

RE ‘Jake’, we prefer ‘Jacob’ but don’t mind Jake at all so if the inevitable happens and Jacob becomes Jake, we wouldn’t hate it.

Popularity does come into it somewhat. Ideally we don’t want a really popular name (personal choice) but also don’t want a name too ‘out there’ so we’re trying to strike a balance somewhere in the middle (Maybe top 50 UK name?) but willing to consider anything really and appreciate these lists change all the time with the rise and fall of certain names

thanks again 🙂

Your names in order of my preference ..

Rory - handsome - becoming more well used.
Isaac - smart
Lucas - nice enough. I prefer Luke. or Louis.
Jacob - I don't like Jake. I do like Jacob and Jacoby

itssquidstella · 04/04/2023 09:15

Isaac - very nice. Idiots will try to spell it Issac, though
Lucas - nice
Rory - okay
Jacob - boring

kezzielea · 04/04/2023 09:27

They're all lovely. My favourite is Isaac as I love biblical names and it is the least used at the moment I think.

DuchessOfSausage · 04/04/2023 12:32

Jacob - will be Jake. OK, best from your list
Isaac - not keen on Ike, but Isaac is OK. Colleague as an Isaac said as Issak, not sure of how they spell it, and I prefer it.
Rory - nice but a lot of people can't say R
Lucas - OK, prefer Luke

ourflagmeansdeath · 04/04/2023 19:34

Rory - Beautiful name I love it so much. Makes me think of the character from Doctor Who. Think it's a fab choice!
Lucas - I like this too. Not as keen on Luke but really like Luca
Jacob - This is great too, just slightly less good as Lucas. Jake is okay.
Isaac - I actually like this as well lol! Just not my fav of the 4

Basically they all seem to be great names to be, with Rory being ever so slightly more amazing than the others.

Stand out is probably Rory as the others are more popular. But to be fair, Rory is used as a girls name too if that bothers you at all - probably because of Gilmore Girls.
