Struggling with a boys name

Names on our list that we quite like but don’t seem right for various reasons are: Zachary
Ethan
Evan
Cameron
Brandon
Rory
Jonah

We have a DS called Nathaniel known as Nate and we love the fact that he has a fairly cool everyday name but a ‘proper’ name that would be taken seriously if he wanted to use it more often when he’s older.

DH doesn’t like any names that are too identifiable as being from a background we don’t have (so had vetoed Luca, Conrad and Brodie) or with a th sound as he doesn’t like how it will be pronounced by certain family members.

I don’t like anything too popular (would prefer outside the top 50 but top 100 even better) and anything that will be shortened to a random sound rather than a proper name.

Our surname is 🦊 so some names can sound a bit cartoon character or just don’t work. I think a longer name sounds better.

It feels like we’ve used the only name we love and this baby will be a ‘that’ll do’ name 😭

I think Jonah and Nathaniel go well together, also Zachary works from your list. I don't know why but Nathaniel seems biblical to me, even though it might not be.

Tobias
Joshua
Elijah
Isaac
Noah
Gabriel

I was thinking:
Josiah & Jeremiah
Are similar to Jonah and go well with Nathaniel. Also Jethro, but that's got th in - how would your DH's relatives pronounce it?

waltzingparrot · 01/04/2023 21:03

Dominic
Harrison
Theodore
Gregory
Emerson

I think this is the front runner but I’m put off by multiple spellings and also am not sure if Zachary has quite as much gravitas as Nathaniel? My overthinking hormonal brain got worried that it would seem we didn’t have aspirations as high for him. Now I know I’m being utterly ridiculous but the doubt is there 😂.

You're not being at all ridiculous, and it's 20 years since I was last pregnant so there are no hormones tricking me.

Henry
George
Arthur
Edward
Benedict
Maxim
Alexander
William
Anthony
Sebastian

Just don't choose a surname as a first name. You'll condemn your child to a lifetime of judgement.

Camden Fox
Austin Fox
Declan Fox
Hudson Fox
Jonathan Fox

Those are all awful, apart from Jonathan.

Camden?!

We liked that the first time around until I realised that Isaac Fox can sound dangerously close to ‘I suck cocks’ 😭

Oh god! Good spot OP!

It’s my relatives but they pronounce them as fs, which would wind my DH up. It would be more noticeable with something like Arthur or Theo though.

I do love Jonah and did when I was pregnant with DS1 but can’t get over the unlucky thing.

Oh god I hate to say this as it’s my first baby (33 weeks currently with a boy). I have definite precious first (and only!) baby issues I’m aware 😂 So I am weirdly protective of my boys name but.. I love the sound of this one for you! If you like it too! So I had to share! Because it seems perfect to my mind with your second name and your (same as mine) desire for something unusual but not too unusual, long enough for a “Sunday full name/ you’re in trouble full name” but also a very easy short name for normal use.

Disclaimer- It’s my chosen much loved name but I’m also fully aware I don’t have the monopoly on all the names and don’t even know you, and that I sound totally mental 😂 so why not share and stop being weird precious first baby 🙄🤦‍♀️😂

My name for my boy is Malakhai. There are various easier spellings. Like Malachi, or Malacai etc. Just have a look online as I did, for one that suits (I wanted the stronger sounding to me, and more “hard spelt” KH part at the end.)

But me and all my friends call him “Kai” for short.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of

“Malakhai Fox”
Shortened to-
“Kai Fox”

Or just some variation of the same but spelt differently. I adore it! (Obviously some hate it so it’s not that big an issue 😂)

KickAssMumma · 02/04/2023 06:31

Nathanial and Malakhai Fox
Nate and Kai Fox

I SSOOOOO wish my second name was so much cooler like yours 😂

BeaKind · 02/04/2023 07:01

Alexander shortened to Xander would be cool!
